Chain Tightening Procedure - Best Practices?

283 Views 6 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  Insured
Hi all, sorry for the dumb question. When I search I find both answers but it feels like one should definitely be right and the other wrong.

Do I raise the rear wheel before and during the process or do I leave the bike on the side stand with the rear wheel down? Apologies if I am missing something very obvious. I have never adjusted the tension on a single sided swingarm before so I want to be sure to do it right. Also, the 60mm slack measurement is from where to where?

Thanks in advance! Even ChatGPT was confused on this LOL

Find a long length of flat and level concrete.
Make sure chain is lubricated.
Sit on your bike with all of your riding gear on, if you normally carry a pillion, both of you on the bike fully kitted for riding.
Very slowly move the bike forward while a friend finds the tightest point of the chain (mid way between front and rear sprocket)
With full riding weight compressing the suspension, bike upright and chain at tight spot have friend adjust the chain leaving approx 20mm of free up and down movement.
Chain adjustment isn't an exact science. There are other ways to do it but the above simulates road conditions and has worked well for me over the last 55 years of looking after my own bikes.

So first I loosen the two bolts on the back of the axle, then I mount up and slowly roll forward, then my friend will use the spanner to adjust appropriately, then he tightens the two bolts and I hope off?? TIA!
No, find the tight spot before you loosen anything.
You are looking for the tight spot while trying to simulate riding conditions.

So I do the entire thing with the bike on the side stand then? No rear stand needed?

No, you do the entire thing with the bike upright and full rider load on the bike. A two person job and zero stands involved.

Got it, thanks!
