has 17k on it. What should I look for and any suggestions at all. Rides well, took awhile to idle smoothly. All the basic stuff is up to snuff. Engine questions, should I do a compression check, how long does one of these engines last. Last 10k were on highway. The bottom of the engine is slightly wet.
Thanks for any help at all. :)

Well, I've got a '00 with 19k andit's going strong. As long as it's been maintained well, there's no reason the bike can't make 100k or more. Theres some folks on here with triple digit ducs.

You are looking at a signifigant service interval coming up soon, at 18k. So be ready for that

belts every 2 years and/or 12,000 miles, so hopefully those have been replaced.

a little damp engine is normal, just make sure it is not wet. if you are looking for the leak, check around the base gaskets of the cylinders.

not much else to thinking about. 1999 is pre immobilizer crap, so you don't have to worry about red keys and other monkey business.

I don't think a wet engine is ok. See if you can figure out where the oil's coming from.

Mine had a leaking freeze plug at about 12k. That involved pulling the horizontal head to replace the plug.

Honestly, I have a pretty significant list of problems I've had. Most I've easily fixed myself for modest $. No point sharing the list because I don't think there's necessarily anything systematic that you should be looking for.
thanks for all the help. found he had done all the service work. looks great and will change a few things from the pics i see here. i already have 100mi. on it from yesterday when I picked it up.

Keep twisting those wrists........
