Any comments, crash tests, etc on these Joe Rocket pants? how about similar open mesh pants?

I am considering these as overpants for all season driving; over jeans when cold, over shorts when very warm!

What do you guys and gals think?

Re: Any experience, good or bad with Phoenix pants

The Central Cal Monster Hooligans tested some for you! ;D

about 30-40mph pavement then dirt. belly-slide....
pants did their job (matching jacket, gloves too) but the stitching blew out on the knee. definately 1-crash gear.

i would check the TourMAster Cotech GX Air, a bit sturdier.

Re: Any experience, good or bad with Phoenix pants

I have Pheonix pants (and jacket) for the same usage you plan. Over jeans and long sleeves for cooler weather. Over shorts and t shirt in the FL heat.

Luckily I haven't tested mine yet, but have read a lot of reports that indicate they are relatively good for that one crash - then replace them. For the money, and the fact that they are really comfortable in extreme heat (read you won't have an excuse not to wear them) as long as you are moving.

Be sure to get the tightest fitting size you can be comfortable in. Because the mesh gives more than leather, you want to keep the armor in place if you go down. My pants fit good everywhere except being too baggy around the hips. It's not as bad with jeans under them, but with thin shorts, I feel like the hip padding will be anywhere but over my hips after I hit.

If you live where it's hot, a mesh outfit is worthwhile whether it's Joe Rocket, FirstGear, Field Sheer, or whatever. It won't protect you like leather, but it's way ahead of no gear.

I wear perforated Joe Rocket Leathers(and not much else)! I'd say it's cheap, but not crap. Crap would be wearing short, t shirt and flip flops!
I am ordering a Dainese 2 pc suit, this spring, though. Kinda gota save for it.(I have 2 kids to feed)

Why thank you, Ally! All this time, I thought I was crazy to spend over a grand on leathers. Especially since I take the kids to the local Salvation Army for school clothes! ;D ;D
(just kidding)

Re: Any experience, good or bad with Phoenix pants

I have read a couple reviews of the Phoenix gear and the general consensus seems to be: It offers a somewhat satisfactory level of protection but will fail in ways that leather will not. In other words, it can protect against large areas of road rash, but will still wear through in impact specific points, shoulders, knees, etc. But what really made me decide to go with leather were the reports that said that the friction in a crash or slide can melt the textile to your skin. No thanks. Apparently Ellen's friend has experienced this and the thought of it freaks me out.

Sorry I can't give you a review of the Phoenix pants- I considered them for about a second and then decided on leather and I'm very happy with my choice. Also, if you are thinking about getting them because you ride in hot weather, I ride in LA and my Vanson perfs do a fine job of keeping me relatively cool.

If you're determined to ride with mesh gear keep looking. Joe Rocket is ****! Check out Bates leathers, First Gear, Dianese, etc. For about the same cost or just a little more you can get some much higher quality gear. My wife has had the stitching start to come out of all of her Joe Rocket pants at the Knees (I won't wear Joe Rocket).
