MSN Groups is a good place to get a free email/message board. However, you can't use the calendar unless you are a MSN subscriber. I just signed up for the service without access so I can post calendar events and have more photo storage. You can build pages with member lists, for sale sections or whatever you need. It is not real versatile but will work as a starting point. Our local group was started almost 2 years ago and we are still on MSN.

Yahoo also provides email lists - I am on the Paso and Zane Laverda lists there.
