The original clutch on my S4 finally gave it up at a little past 28k miles.
Symptoms were very grabby engagement accompanied by a 'squawk' heard and felt through the bike and lever.

Not surprising, considering the condition of the friction plates and basket:

That's about a 2mm gap.

Replaced with a Barnett basket and a set of stock plates.

Weighed a bunch of parts while I had the chance:

OEM steel basket : 38.6 oz
Barnett aluminum basket : 16.2 oz ( 1.4 lb reduction )
Set of 9 stock steel plates : 26.0 oz
Set of 7 stock steel frictions : 23.7 oz
OEM hub : 34.7 oz

Total weight, OEM : 123 oz
Total weight, OEM with Barnett basket : 100.6 oz ( 18% weight reduction )

Test ride tomorrow, I doubt I'll be able to detect the weight difference, but you never know.

Barnett baskets have steel inserts, this basket wasn't brand new and you can see where the plates have worn the inserts a bit:

I replaced my old Barnett clutch pack (over 20K) with a new Barnett pack this summer. I still had the original ducati clutch pack (94 900M) and compared the weight....

The Barnett was 1lb 4 1/2 oz lighter then the original, 2lb verses 3lb 4 1/2 oz ....The new Barnett pack was even a few oz lighter then the old one??

Works great [thumbsup]

He got a heck of a deal ;)
Indeed, just very slightly used. ;D

I found the basket shown for $US 224 at Motostrano.

Not sure what the OEM plates run, CA Cycleworks has Barnett aluminum plate sets for $US 149.

I recall that Barnett claims that they can be replaced, but I'm not sure.

They're riveted on, so it's not a 'customer replaceable' deal.
