Last year, my 2014 Monster 796 gradually became harder and harder to start. It would often sound like it’s about to fire up, only to shut off and the cluster would reset, giving me an error message. Now it does nothing but click at me when I push the ignition button. I replaced the battery last year when I thought that was the culprit, but the problem only got worse. Does anyone have any ideas?

I am going to ask the obvious questions: Did you fully charge your battery? What is your voltage at rest and voltage under load? Did you try and jump the starter and see if it turns?

Perhaps the starter has an internal short or is seized and causes a large voltage drop which resets the cluster. I would also check all your grounds and connections.

I have come across a similar issues over the years, here is another recently posted it. I wonder if it's the same issue?

I see the exact issue in the video I attached if I haven't ridden the bike for a few days. I'm doubtful that it's the battery, as I keep it on a trickle charger when I'm not riding.
Some have suggested that when the oil drains fully after a few days, that the first crank is "harder" and can cause a large current draw in the starter and thereby drop the voltage enough the at the cluster cuts out. I've read folks replacing the wiring from the solenoid to the starter. The idea being that the cables cannot carry the load (too much internal resistance).

It's an occasional niggle that has bothered me enough that I'd like to chase it down - more out of curiosity than anything else.

I'll do a few checks on my machine when I get home and report back here. Maybe cross checking notes will help.

Thanks Jeff,
I had heard similar and was getting ready to change to LED headlights, thinking the same thing - the LED would use a lot less current and would free up juice for the started.
To test this I waited until the headlight turned off (it does after about 30 - 60 seconds) and then tried to start.

But I got the same result, initially the cluster would die and then the second time the bike would start.
So I am starting to think it's not all on the headlight - that there may be something more to it.

That said, I didn't try actually pulling the fuse, I'll give this a go and report back.

Hi
I have a 2013 1100evo monster. It has always had an issue wanting to start, even after I changed the battery. I also keep it on a trickle charger. It seems to me, either it cant draw enough current and doesn't turn the motor over fast enough or the fuel mixture is wrong. When I try to start it just keeps cranking with out starting.

Anyway I found a trick if I turn the bike on and try and start it, but only let it crank one revolution. Turn the bike off. Then turn it on and try again it always starts instantly the second time.
I have no idea why that is, but it works.
