Hi everyone, I am new to the forum and have little experience with Monsters so hope someone out there can help.

My girlfriend has recently purchased a 2004 Monster 620ie and loves it. It seems to ride perfectly until it gets to around 80-90 mph at which it gives no more. It will comfortable get to this speed in 3rd gear yet even when you change up the speed will not increase past this, the revs just reduce as you would expect.

As mentioned the bike is new to us so it could probably do with a full Ducati service but i was wondering if there is anything obvious I am missing. I have had a search online and it doesn't appear to be a common problem (or one i could find any info on). The previous owner was a woman who was nervous rider so is it possible a limiter or something has been placed on the bike?

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

If you are in Europe, or got a bike originally sold there, it's possible that there is a limiter installed to make it meet the HP limit for a new rider. If not, I don't have a good answer for you. An M620 should be good for well over 120mph.

Thank you for your feedback. I should have said the I am in the UK and bought the bike here in Britain so there is a strong chance you are correct. Now just to figure out how to remove it.

very simple, on the Gashuis, the mechanism by which the throttle cable running to it, there is somewhere a bolt right through it. therefore the gas can not be opened up and your monster 25kw. This bolt should run you out and voila you have full power ..

I think S4R is saying there is a bolt at the carburetor cams or at the throttle that is set to prevent you from opening it fully. Many scooters are sold this way in the USA. There are all kinds of "moped" regulations such as limited to automatic transmission, under 50cc and top speeds of 32mph. Most of the "49.55"cc mopeds can see speeds greater than 40mph. To keep things simple the manufacturers have a variety of methods to prevent top speeds such as; a thick washer in between the riser plates of the pulleys of the CVT (this prevents the plates from coming together and thus limits the transmission output), a set screw or small plastic pellet under the throttle cam (this prevents the throttle from turning fully), a plastic washer or pellet set above the carburetor slide (this prevents the opening of the slide to prevent more air from getting in). Most of these methods can easily be corrected without
additional costs.

With it being a 620, that's fuel injected, I wonder if it's a matter of reprogramming your ECU?

So after all the above comments I had a good look over the bike and realised there was, as mentioned, something stopping the throttle being opened fully.

While it was a little fiddly it was relatively easy to remove. The bike will now comfortably do 100 mph with me on (95kg) so will carry my girlfriend with ease. It could probably do with a good service but until then that you for all your help. I would have been lost without it :grin

Hi there. I have an 03 m400. I was wondering if it’s the same limiting system. I see the throttle cam has a tab that stops it rotating at a certain point but I don’t see a way of removing the part that the tab hits. Is it an option to cut the tab off?

Check to see if you are getting 90° of rotation at the throttle before you do anything rash.
If you're not getting the full 90° then "something" is definitely stopping it.
Pics of what you're looking at would help.
