I am about to take my baby in to get this leak fixed. If you have the 02 620 you should check for the leak as well . I hear it is common.

My question for the tech gurus-- is there any work I should have done while the motor is torn apart? I figure while they have it broke down I should get some stuff done. Any ideas and price estimates are appreciated!!!!

Tony,

Any chance you can give us a pic or a description of what to look for and where? Where did the oil pool on your engine and what made them conclude it was the gasket?

thanks,
mike

sorry, I dont have any pics, but it is the base of the vertical cylinder. At the base of it you will see a very small amount of oil laying on the motor. I didnt even think much of it until I had someone look at it. I guess it gets progressively worse over time. If I think about it, I will get a pic up in the next day or two. As far as determining it was a leak, monstergirl620 is in tight with the crew at Motoprimo (our local dealer) and she had the same exact thing happen to hers. As soon as she saw mine, she told me to get it in and replaced before it got worse. I guess it is about a $600 repair.

happened to a lot of us. The guywho did mine said there is an oil galley back there with something like 100 lbs of pressure. Seems hard to believe. He has done a buttload of them.
Big leap of faith letting someone else take apart my engine with only 1000 miles on it :'(

My 750 with 3600 miles on it just started the leak in the vertical cylinder. I'm going to try and do it myself. I don't think it should be too hard as long as I mark all of the timing stuff right.

Pretty common on S4's, apparently.

I've been mopping up after mine for quite a while. I'm trying to wait until (our so-called) winter or I can roll it in with some other fix.

I'm with vincentS4 on this one, I'm not keen on having someone else crack my motor open either.

well I suppose I could do it myself, if I had the tools, manuals and the time, but alas I am not that fortunate.

So back to part 2 of my pregunta.. Is there anything else mod wise that I should have done while it is torn apart?

I have had mine done once already (2001 M750d), and now about a year later it needs to be done again...

tonyj,

an archive search turned up a post by someone whose 620 had its gasket swapped a couple times. Shop decided to mill the cylinder to accept an older style gasket. Might be worth looking into to avoid this same problem again...

Can you describe exactly where this is on the engine please. Right/left, etc. I found some gooey oil accumulated between a couple casings the other day. Hope it's not a leak. I also noticed many seals were sealed using the glue-type stuff rather than the gasket style used in Jap bikes. Hmm.
Thanks for the info...

MADDOG is getting together tomorrow. I am sure someone will have a digital cam so we can get more pics. If anything, just look all around the base of that cylinder. If you see any oil at all, get it checked out.
