Hey Guys,

I was trying to start my bike (Monster 1100) this morning and then on the dash "rsw 0005" or something like that appeared and then my bike restarted. This happened twice before I was able to get my bike started.

Has anyone seen this before?

Does the bike start? This usually happens when the battery is completely dead.

It might not be. Do you keep it on a tender and how long between each start?

My 796 does the same damn thing. Just spent 2 weeks at the dealer where they " could not replicate" the issue. They charged the battery and it started fine. I keep it on a Battery Tender attached to a pigtail installed by the dealer when I am not planning to ride for a few days. Still throws this code, and like yours, fires on try #3. Once it's running, it starts on subsequent attempts no prob. Bike has 1300 miles on it. I have left it sit for 7 days without being on the charger and will try to start it tomorrow. Never owner a bike that could not sit for a few weeks without starting, especially a new bike. This keeps up, I will be on a Ninja
1000 come summer.

Let me say that I had this same fault with my Monster 696 and it turned out to be a dead stator regulator rectifier. Not saying your situation will be the same, but it is worth having a shop properly diagnose the problem.

eric9877, I checked the manual the first time the bike threw this code, and it is NOT listed. Odd that so many bikes seem to have this issue and dealers act like they have no clue what is causing it.
Michael, my Tender also went green and the bike still took 3 tries to start. Always starts on try #3. And this problem did not start until I got the Tender and had the bike on it for 2 weeks or so since I was not riding. I did this as I was told that this was how you store a Ducati. Now I will not use the Tender unless it wont start. Seems to do fine sitting for a week or so between starts.

The pigtail was dealer installed prior to purchase. They put them on all the bikes they sell. And as this is a new bike under warranty, I will let the dealer fix the issue. From what they told me, they went through the whole bike looking for a cause and only noted that the battery wasn't fully charged. That is why I find it interesting that myself and others keep them on Battery Tenders that show a full charge. Can a Tender not get the battery charged? Keep in mind the bike has 1300 miles on it and I've had it for 4 months. The battery should be fine.

Hello everyone,

I am new to the forum, I have a 2011 M796 which is my first motorcycle.

Some history...I bought it used with around 5k miles on it. There was evidence of a drop and the guy said it was dropped in a parking lot. Anyway, the wrench maintenance icon is illuminated since i bought it. So I assume he never went to get the break in period service. I have 6006 miles on it now, coming up on service 1. I changed the oil when i bought it, royal purple. I installed a K&N air filter and aside from those two things the bike is stock.

There is a long story in between then and now. In a nut shell the battery was dead and the bike was throwing the 0005sw code or whatever it is. Also my dog ate the only key and I had a bitch of a time getting through that ordeal but thats a story for a different post.

Now I ride about 12 miles a day for work. Sometimes more or less. I don't use a tender. When I did the oil change I didn't know to keep the bike upright to maintain proper level, anyway, I over filled it and ran it that way for a while until i figured it out. At that time I was having problems starting the bike up in the morning. I live in hawaii and the temperature in the mornings is in the 60's at this time of year. I drained the oil to the correct specification and the starting issues ceased. That went on for about a week and a half to two weeks and the starting issues emerged again. This time alternating between the 0005sw code and the bike starting, idling for a while, then randomly cutting off as if i hit the emergency switch. Today my bike was parked under a covered parking garage. I went to start it at around 1510 and the bike tried to turn over and then it died. I started it after the third try. On the ride home I couldn't tell what it was but the bike felt different. I want to do my service 1 early because I don't feel like waiting until 7500 miles to do it. I feel like the bike is going to get worse, gut feeling I guess.

Anyway, I read on here that one of the members on here did the charcoal canister delete and his starting issues went away. I am going to delete it soon and I will post the results. I hope just by sharing my information that it helps someone solves their issues.

Anyone work this problem out? I have an 09' 696.
I got an error message rsw002 bike did not start and of course no mention of this code in the manual. The bike only started by push starting it.
Put in a new battery and had the rectifier changed. Everything was working fine and the battery was getting charged. Rode the bike a couple of times (the bike never sat for more than a couple of days) and two weeks later the problem is back?
Did any of you guys figure this out? I really hope it's not the stator

there are two relays near the starter relay you should check out. They are small black and rectangular, you can remove the outer black casing and check the conact points. the best way is to take an exacto knife and trim the little tabs holding the case on, then carefully pry it up with a pocket screwdriver then look to see if the conacts are burnt. if not- no harm done and you can put it back together and reinstall them. if they are burnt your dealer will have to order them. if you can't wait go to a benz repair shop and ask for a fuel pump relay for an 2005 c230, chassis number 203.040 and they will have them in stock.

Mine spent 2 weeks at the dealer as they tried to replicate the code, of course it did not appear. They checked the entire electrical system, and everything is fine.
So here is what I do now. As its summer and I ride a few times a week, the issue has not popped up. But if it sits for a while, I plug in the Battery tender, wait for the light to go green, and unplug it the night before I ride. Bike starts fine. If I leave it plugged in all the time, it throws this code occasionally.
Also, run Regular gas. After reading the posts on how 91 octane (US) is unnecessary and can make the bike harder to start, I only run 87, and it fires up much easier. I was having to run the starter for 10 secs or more to get it to fire with Premium gas. Then it would sometimes throw the code as a thank you.

The problem is still there, but Ive learned how to minimize its impact, as apparently there is nothing wrong with my bike, despite that it throws this code sometimes. The hassles we put up with to ride a Ducati...

the only thing you should have to deal with on a duc is the vtwin engine vibration and the turn in issues with the rake and offset on the triples ducati chooses to use on biposto bikes. anything else is BS, e mail and call DNA if the dealer can't figure out your bike so they can get a technical specialist to handle it. the last thing you want is to limp a bike along until the warranty expires then have it fail and cost you a fortune because the dealer didn't feel like getting it handled. why on earth would you pay a premium for a new bike only to have to deal with faults? You could have bought a faster, more reliable honda for less money. you have some power as a customer.

Hi,

Like other 796 owners, I'm having a lot of issues with the rsw0005 error.
All started after the transmission broke.
It was changed under warranty, however since, it's been a pain to start the beast from the first try.

After the winter, she wouldn't start.
Bought the battery tender, left her charging for a day and she started at the 3rd try.
Made me pretty happy, however I haven't been able to start her again since.

Either she will give me the rsw0005 or the battery dies on me.
Would this mean my battery is completely dead? (bike is 2,5yrs old, 15.000km)
Need to check if the warranty is extended with the change of transmission last year, however I doubt it will be the case.

Any ideas on what may get the 796 back on the road would be great.

Hi there. I know this is an old thread but now my bike (2013 796) is starting to throw this fault code. Has anyone got a definative answer to whats causing it??

99.9% dead battery.

Started having the same symptoms 3 years after having bought the bike, battery was (almost) dead, wouldn't start on 1st or 2nd/3rd time (even during Summer-time), then - bam - it would start, same error appeared on the dash.

Swapped for a new yuasa couple of months ago, problem disappeared...

Dudes, these are L-twins we're talking about, just the cranking requires LOTS of juice compared to an I4, also, no matter if you have 1000Km's or 30.000Km's on the odo, if the battery's drained... it's drained (aka "dead"), no amount of re-charging or tendering can bring it back to life.

Also, don't expect them to last more than 3 years (for reasons explained above)

Cheers

I've been getting that same code (well looks similar) when I try to start my bike after I've been away working for some 4-5weeks.
I just put it down to a flat battery. I know I'm due to change the battery out as its over 2yrs old now and has been flat a couple times.

Thanks Rosso I suspected that. Taking to someone else (a mech) last night they said the same and also that the r SW bit refers to "reset software" which explains the trip and clock resetting also it resets the ECU so it has to "learn" all over again. Clever little sods these bikes aren't they!

I just picked up a 2011 Monster 796 with 440 miles. I got to ride it home the day I picked it up. Next day I get this issue, just my luck. Anyway Im gonna swap the battery, I'm hoping its just a dead battery seeing as the bike is 4 years old and has been sitting most of its life.

What battery do you guys recommend?

My deltran was $100 and doesn't need special chargers. Plus it only weighs about 2 lbs.

Really, the other lithium batteries don't need those special chargers either because the bike charges them like a regular charger would. You just have to make sure you dont overcharge them. Their lifespan lasts longer, their charge lasts longer, discharge more slowly during use, and have to be charged less frequently making them lower maintenance.

The yuasa may be a better buy if you want cheaper and plan on selling the bike within a couple of years, but if not the lithium is something to consider, in particular the deltran since it's cheap.
