Re: Anyone been to Dubai?

the project on a whole is rather breathtaking

and the research potential as far as terraforming can't be argued as bad

but right now when the whole co2 absorbtion in the ocean is being debated

destroying a coral reef can't be a good thing

Re: Anyone been to Dubai?

my negative comment

the palm

it has been argued that Palm Jumeirah is actually creating reef habitat due to it's construction in a relatively barren section of the ocean floor

on the otherhand

the second palm that is being built, Palm Jebel Ali

is a gawd dam ecological disaster

unless the emirates listen and transplant the coral reef they are going to destroy

I think it is funny that the general idea that americans are hated world wide due to our excess

is magnified 2 fold in a place like Dubai and they are seen as a wonderland of acceptence, success, and prosperity

Seriously, I'd be there to do a job and get out. Thanks for the input.

Wow. The only nugget of wisdom thus far

Before I start please know I respect the majority of your opinions in general, but in this instance I am surprised at how shallow and one-sided the responses have been. IMO there are serious concerns that should give pause to any principled and free-thinking person before they commit their livelihood there.

So, beautiful city, sun, posh resorts, ferraris, hot eurobabes and phat pay. No-brainer right? Well, I don't think it is that simple.

Consider:

- The heat. I passed through there during the summer once, and it feels like you are being roasted like kebab. I'm from south Tx and it was too much for me. The only consolation is that every last bus and outhouse is air-conditioned.

- The traffic. Most of this I hear from some Swedish friends that live there. The constant construction doesn't help any. Think rush-hour LA with all teenage drivers and you get the idea. This and the above make it a pretty shitty place for motorcyclists.

- Expensive. Even with the tax-free benefits the only stuff that comes out cheaper is fuel and electronics. Cost of living is not insignificant. Thats why they have to pay you more. You certainly aren't going to be taking home 4x the cash at the end of the day when a bag of washed lettuce costs $10.

- Restrictive laws. As an american you won't be used to the laws that limit clothing, drinking, overall freedom of speech to the extent that they do. It's a real eye-opener to the freedoms we have in America. Are you gay? I couldn't care less, but Dubai does; homosexual acts are punishable by death. These laws are operate on the pretense of moral grounds, but are overlooked when convenient. For example prostitution, though illegal by law, is conspicuously present in the emirate because of an economy that is largely based on tourism and trade.

- Internet proxies, while we're talking about freedom. There is just one internet/telephone service there. Hell, Microsoft could learn some monopoly lessons from them. Expect to find file-sharing, flickr, myspace, adult and innumerable blog sites are blocked. Not unlike China.

Those are just the most tangible bullet points. I could easily go into Dubai's issues with human and labor rights, forced sex trade, etc., but that is beyond the scope of our friendly forum, and we don't need to get into political/religious issues here.

However I will say that Dubai comes off as more accessible to westerners than other arab states only because it embodies the worst flaws western culture is prone to: materialistic excess, corporate greed unchecked by environmental or social responsibility (a real no-brainer is why Halliburton moved their HQ there), corrupt and hypocrital government. It tries to be a playground for the rich and adhere to traditional islamist roots at the same time.

If you are going to go, go as an observer with open eyes, not as a tourist or corporate tool.
