Why did I wait so long?

Hi Folks,
So at the age of 51 I decided I should find out what all the fuss was about riding motorcycles. Got my L's 2 weeks ago and then bought myself a 2001 Ducati Monster 400 to learn on. Could not have imagined the fuss it would create riding it to work and how much enjoyment I would get from riding it.
I'm looking forward to learning about caring for my machine and riding it well.
Cheers
Andrew

Congrats Andrew! I thought I was late to the game at 34 when I got my license this past Sept and my 696 in October, but glad to see I wasn't the only one. Enjoy the bike and the forum and ride safe!

I sold a 400 back in March. Absolutely one of the most fun bikes! But i couldn't justify having 2 monsters. Which version have you got? I had one of the last Carbed S models. Metal tank, twin front discs, carbon fibre hugger and side panels. Absolutely beautiful thing. Hope you have a lot of fun on it! I got to know mine pretty well mechanically so drop me a note if you have any issues. I think I still have a shop manual on my computer...

Thanks everyone for your encouragement.

AndyB,
I would really appreciate a copy of the service manual as I intend to maintain it myself and one of the first jobs is cam belt change. Will seeI if I can work out how to send you a personal message.

RV6Andy: welcome to riding. I'm in the same, uh, demographic as you. I used to ride a lot about 20 years ago, but then came the pleasant baggage of adulthood--kids, homeownership, etc. Sold my bike and never thought about it until this spring, when The Itch came back.

Now that my son is 18, I took the MSF course with him and got an old Monster 620 for him and a shiny new 796 for me, and I love riding again.

(Geelong is near Melbourne, right? I bet you have some beautiful roads in that area. Post photos when you can...)
