2001 M900 Wont Start

Just bought a used 2001 Monster 900 this past weekend and now it wont start.

Time Line of events.
2/14 @ 0700 - Bike cranked up nicely right away
Put bike on back of truck and drove 700 mi in 20 degree temperature
2/14 @ 1700 - Pulled bike off truck, it cranked up fine, drove it 5 miles home...in 20 degree weather.

2/15 @ 1400 - Went to start bike. Cranked over and died right away. Went to crank again and nothing, not even an attempt at crank. Charged until 1700.

2/15 @ 1700 - No crank/no start. Placed on charger overnight.

2/16 @ 1200 - No crank.


Have kickstand up, have stop switch on Run, in neutral, every time I try and start so those variables are out.

Interesting note - was getting accustomed to controls and pushed the headlight button on and the high beam stays on permanently and the light button wont disengage.

Any ideas what might be preventing this thing from starting up?

Is it possible the battery is completely dead? Can you check it on a multimeter? Start looking under the tank at your cables. Make sure all your visible connections are good. I just found a spot on my 750 where the tank edge has cut into the cables because they were laid improperly.

all the lights are on and bright, the horn is loud. the battery was purchased in june...I have a brand new battery that I am going to install anyways just to check.

I had a similar situation where all the lights were on but when i hit the ignition, absolut silence. It was a dead battery. However, if you still have nothing with a new battery there must be a disconnect somewhere between the starter and the ignition. If you dont have a shop manual start by locating all the cables coming off the ignition switch and the kill switch. Look for possible breaks.

switched a new battery in, nothing still. all the cables seem fine.

could there be an issue with the kickstand sensor?

I also noticed that that spark plug connectors don't seem to fit on nice and snug like other bikes. am I finding my problem or is this common?
again, it worked before but not now so I don't know how that would be the problem.

not sure if it could be the temperature. mine has a hard time starting when it's cold. my plug connectors are on their pretty firm.

if the bike reads that it's in neutral and still shows the same symptoms, then i don't think it's your kickstand switch.

perhaps a connection to the starter is loose or dirty?

If the spark plugs were disconnected you would still get a bike trying to turn over. It just wouldn't complete the turn without any fire. You've got silence right? I think you're ignition switch/starter has to have lost connection somewhere. What really worries me is that it stopped while running at some point right? I hate to say it but this may be a job for the pros. I'm on the brink of bringing them the 750 too and I really can't afford it... Wish i could be more help bud. If i think of anything else I'll get back to you.

I don't know what to make of this...it hit 40 degrees a couple of days ago and it cranked right over.

Only problem remaining is that the hi beam is stuck in the on position and wont shut off. maybe if it hits 50 that will start working.
