SBK fork swap resurrected -- front axle question

I've been reading everything I can find on this forum, DMF.org, and Ducati.org, and there's one thing I still can't clear up -- the front axle.

I have a set of 2010 848 forks on the way. I plan to bore out my top triple to 53, shim the lowers, and either 848 rotors or the Corse Dynamics rotor spacers. But I can't clearly find if I can use my 796 axle or not. Some say a shim/spacer is required? Some say I need the 848 axle? It's the last piece of this puzzle I'm trying to figure out, so maybe someone that has done it can weigh in.

Also, I've been active on here lately, sorry if it's getting annoying. I just finished my Master's a last month, so now I have time for such things.
