999 shock on an S2R 1000

I did a write up on another forum and thought I would share here. This mod is easy, cheap, and makes a world of difference to the handling of an S2R1000. Sorry for the shitty cell phone pics.

First off find yourself a 999 shock. I found mine on eBay for $75.00 and had a friend that owns a shop rebuild it to make sure it was all good.

Next remove your seat and look at a bunch of crap you will be removing. The oil breather box has got to go.

As you can tell you will also need to find a place for the regulator/rectifier as it mounts to the breather box. So unbolt (don't disconnect it) and set it to the side. After you pull all of the stuff out this is what you should be seeing.

Now you are also going to have to cut the coil mount off of your frame as the reservoir on the shock will not allow the new shock to fit the area.

I just sanded and Kryloned the frame after as it is under the side pods and is not seen.

Next measure your frame width and length for a mounting plate for the regulator/rectifier & coil to be mounted onto. Then cut a piece of aluminum to fit.

And this is what mine looks like with the reg/rec mounted:

You will need to make a notch so the coil fits nice:

And this is with it all mounted up:

Now that is all pretty and bolted up and your proud of your modding ability...pull it out and yank the stock shock out! Bolt at the top and a bolt at the bottom. Bike supported in the middle. Pull the shock out the top and slide the new one in and bolt it up. DO NOT FORGET TO TORQUE THE BOLTS!!!! Now put your new mount back on, adjust your suspension, and enjoy the fruits of your labor.

That looks cool.
Does it make the rear of the bike sit higher?

Maybe a little bit higher but not enough to really notice. What I did notice was the back end just plain feels more planted. Having more adjustability is definitely nice. Only bad part is that I can now tell how crappy the front is.

Aw but maybe I was saying that Ducati created the S4RS to cure your woes.
