Is this a good buy?
Ok peeps, I need help from you guys that are more experienced in the SBK department. I'm looking into maybe buying this bike come summer. Is it worth it? Its a 748s with a little over 12k on the clock. I've been emailing the owner and he is willing to lower the price 500 because it hasn't had the 12k adjustment done yet.
http://www.ducati.ms/forums/showthread.php?t=40342
Additional info:
- Salvaged but clean title
- Fresh paint
- Owner is selling because he wrecked racing his 125 and has to go through rehab
So what do you think?
Also, I will not be selling the monster.
Now if only every one of you could pitch in 1$... ;D

Track bike or Street bike? What are you planning to use this bike for?

so basically 5800 then?
no doubt, it looks like a great bike. And that figure is reasonable to start with.
Still a few things to consider though:
- The bike is in San Diego - how do you intend to transport it? that is surely going to cost a few hundred or more whether it is shipped or if you go out there and bring it back yourself. Props if you ride it home from San Diego [thumbsup]
- You going to have the shop do the 12k or do it yourself (or the unspoken and cheapest 3rd option: get Hiero all liquored up and let him have at it one sunday) ? If you have it done at the shop that is only more ka-ching! to consider as 4V adjustments on these bikes are notoriously pricey and you'd be lucky to get it done (at a shop that is) for under 500.
So both of those are going to factor into the final cost you wind up paying for the bike.

Re: Is this a good buy?
The plan would be to ride it back over 2-3 days depending on my back...
I would just prob give Hiero a couple of Johnny Blacks and have my grandmother cook him an authentic Venezuelan dinner in exchange for the valve check. Last time I was over at his place he mentioned that his valve adjustment was coming up so I dunno...
Joe, it would probably be a mix between street toy and track ho, but it would def not be my daily commuter like the monster...

I didn't even look and wouldn't soon as I see "salvage title". Too many unknowns there... It may look pretty, but imo it's a gamble.

Re: Is this a good buy?
here comes the salvage title police olice:
there are just as many "unknowns with a "clean title" bike.
all a salvage title means is that an owner filed a claim and the ins. co. deemed the cost of repair to exceed value of bike.
you are just a likely to get a completely F***ed up "clean title" bike that a PO has destroyed/neglected/wrecked and didn't file a claim and is not disclosing any of this. as with the purchase of anything used, just check it out yourself (or someone trustworthy) and if it dosen't feel quite right don't be afraid to walk away....
LOL, you can even get a defective bike/car brand-new (regardless of brand they all can have defects), but at least there is some sort of warranty....LOL and sometimes NOT!

Re: Is this a good buy?
I'm with OneSpeed regarding the title. Best to have it thoroughly looked at before buying -- and ofcourse you want to ride it before buying. >
Looks like a real clean bike, I like the Tamburini designed bikes but for the kinda cheddar he's asking I would just buy a 996. I've seen a few local bike go for about that much, even a little less. But that's just me, different strokes for different folks. :P
Good Luck [thumbsup]

all a salvage title means is that an owner filed a claim and the ins. co. deemed the cost of repair to exceed value of bike -- well what do you think that means?! lol. It was that f'd up that they'd need to do that. I've 'given' a bike and a car to insurance companies that fall under that category and I'd say anyone who bought either after being fixed up 'was taking a chance'.
Ultimately however, the fact that it has a salvage title is a known that there was some major issue and that title forever stays with the bike. It's something to consider for resale down the line. You're also right about getting an used bike that was jacked/wrecked and the owner cleaned it up really well therefore bypassing the negative 'salvage title' issue, but then again you're going to check it out yourself before buying and optimally have a mechanic check it out. My point being the "salvage title police" is he asked for opinions and I would not consider one with that on the title.

Re: Is this a good buy?
Tamburinis are beautiful!
Just make sure you at least get somebody you trust in SoCal to give it a once over. I'm sure a SoCal DMLer would do that for ya. Anyways check out NeufUnSix's thread on the Desmoquattro SBKs
