can't say much for the enfields in the US, since there are so few and who knows if they are broken in and cared for "properly" but the enfields that ae provided for that tour are no doubt sturdy and reliable, since many billions of indians have been heavily using/manufacturing/tinkering/generally doing every-thing on these bikes since the late 1940's they know how they work , what to do to keep them from breaking down and what to fix when they do break.....

c'mon any of you see "long way 'round" the cameraman's BMW GS frame breaks, then fries the ECU gettting it re-welded, so they buy a brnad new from the crate $1000 russian 2-stroke that goes and goes and goes, and goes some more, til something in the tranny or clutch breaks, then two ancient-looking mongolians fix it with a screwdriver, vice grips, and maybe a hammer/duct tape and bubble gum and whatever else, right there in the dirt, and then the bike miraculously keeps on going until they finally send another beemer for the cameraman to use....it's not an enfield, but is a fine example of what locals can do with their local equipment...

great link BTW joe, i'll let you know how the tour is when i'm living in india sometime in the near future ;^)

OneSpeed, my intial response was kinda tongue-in-cheek...one of our Austin Monster guys spends a lot of time in India....and so the jokes n' pokes fly when discussing this type of thing....

the Brits have nothing but praise for this trip (as per journo's opinions in their mags)...but then again, they are journo's, and having FHE with moto-journo's I DO have an opinion about them!

Enfields are crap. Enfields in India are crap. When you depend as heavily on a bike as many Indians do, you'll find ways to keep it otr but that a nod towards ingenious bodgery rather than a reliable machine. I believe that's what you were saying, Paul, but just reiterate :P

The dealership I was most recently employ'd at "sold" Royal Enfields. They where in the process of placing their first order when I was interviewing & despite my insistence - I was familiar w RE from my time in England - they went ahead. They sold a handful at first. ALL of which came back w problems: consistently & w a different symptom each time : They where sold w a one year warranty which I was responsible for submitting. It was a painful process & they only paid out on a couple occasions. We lost well over margin on unpaid warranty tickets especially considering that the process demanded we purchase replacement parts that we were not reimbursed for! I wasn't going to abandon our customers but we were well chuffed when they sold their machines out of area.

The last year I was there we had three still on the floor though we had terminated our dealer agreement. Plenty of people - & they attracted a particular type - wander'd in to look & wanted to chat for hours about dusty machines we obviously didn't care about & had no real interest in selling locally but nobody purchased. We had those things priced at cost but the word was out.

I would do India on an LML NV150 which was the an Indian licensed Piaggio Vespa PX150. At least I'd know every bit of it & what spares to carry/pick-up. I rode one down I-35 from Lawrence, ks to ATX on my 21st birthday at all 53 mph full throttle w no problems whatsoever. Air-cooled two-stroke in August through TX but it made it just fine; good times ;D

So reliability & warranty service suck, point taken.

OneSpeed - make sure you've got a sidecar for that little guy.
