2006 Ducati Monster S2R 800 with a 2009 Monster 1100s engine in it.
Issue: turn key on - gas pump primes - dash and lights on - immobilizer not on - start button does nothing. No clicks, whirring, nothing. No codes to pull yet.
I want to start removing possible issues, so I'm requesting tests to perform.
I have lonelec cables and DucatiDiag but have not used it yet.
I like to take a very heavy gauge wire, the size of the cables going to the starter, and touch it to both bolts on the solenoid. Turn the key on, wait for the sequence, make sure the kill is off, then touch the wire to both sides of the solenoid. You are basically bypassing the solenoid. The starter will turn over until you remove one end of the wire. If the bike starts, you've narrowed it down.
Could be a loose wire at the solenoid, a burned fuse, bad ground somewhere. Good luck.
I have to ask that as there is still a possibility that there is something wrong in the entire system. You don't even need the key in to bypass the solenoid and get the starter to crank over. If the bike did not start but turned over when in the "on" position, you might have other gremlins.
Thankfully, if it is the solenoid, they can be had for $20 all day on eBay and it takes about 10 minutes to swap one. Even if you buy one and it turns out not to be the solenoid, they are good to have around.
Your bike has the crappy push in white plug in the back of the solenoid, make sure it's fully seated as that is the power to pull the coils over when they energize. If you are handy with a multi meter I would test the small harness that it powers up when you push the smiles button. It should be a positive and negative wire so a simple test light should work between them to show power, an old fashioned 2 wire christmas light bulb inserted into both ends, an old turn signal assembly or whatever.
Check that your fuses are not blown. Then you may also need to check neutral safety switch is lit up green in the dash. Check that the side stand switch is engaged and working. If your bike is still set up correctly I think you can put it in gear, lift the side stand, pull in the clutch lever and then try the start button.
I installed and configured DucatiDiag and using their test suite was able to test the spark at the plug and see a nice spark. So the system can work, if it wants to - I guess...
It seems to me that the issue must be related to what the ECU does and does not want to do... I'm guessing that I'll either need to get a new ECU, or some reprogramming. Anybody know who knows this stuff cold that I can call?
ECU Thermistor was an issue - don't ask me how I figured that out because I'd take the fifth. But I'm not there yet. At least I don't need a new ECU.
So now the immobilizer is on every time I start the bike - the last guy to work on it said he'd disabled it for good, but apparently that's not true.
So, I use the throttle method of disabling that, and boom the start stop switch works and everything cranks over - I even got one half decent combustion. That means spark - which I'm sure of anyway.
I've heard this sort of sound before when gas pressure wasn't right, so I put the old FPR back in - no luck there. Maybe I put it in backwards - have to double check that. Of course, the ECU is mapped for an S2R 800 so I don't expect a smoothly running engine.
The other time I heard this sound was when I had a bad ground, but I just can't find that and since nothing electrical has changed I can't imagine that being the issue.
I have the feeling that gas is not getting into the engine the right way, but how do I know?
So - in summary, I have spark, I have fuel (at least pressure and the fuel if not the right mix), I have starter motor turning over, just don't have actual start.
Could be electrical, but I'm leaning away from that since I really haven't changed anything in that way.
Leaning towards an issue of trying to use the S2R 800 ECU settings with this engine. Might need to buy the map writer software and load a new map on it - like the one for an HM 1100, for example...
Not sure if you mentioned this, but what ECU, ignition, and key are you using? They all have to be from the same model, otherwise they won't be in sync.
I am using the stock ECU, ignition, cluster, and loom from my S2R 800. The immobilizer is enabled at every start, but I can disable it using the throttle method and the ECU no longer blocks start up.
Thanks JDuke - Just to wrap this thread up - I did get the bike running using an OEM S2R1k ECU map. I also reintroduced the PCIII with a zero map. Rode it in to the local Duc shop for a Dyno. Should have it back in a week or so.
