sponge pouch under the fuel tank? sponge disintegrated!

Hi All:
I have a 2002 model Monster 620 i.e.

I have noticed some black powder came out from the pouch under the tank whenever I lift the tank up.
I then realised that the powder was from the disintegrated sponge/foam inside the pouch.

I am wondering what's the function of this sponge/foam pouch?
Is it important to get a new replacement?
or I can just retro-fill any similar size sponge/foam into the pouch.

I believe it is for sound deadining and or tank insulation.

I am not using mine. No problems.

That pad is expensive. I replaced mine and was shocked when I saw that it cost $150! Why anyone would want to dampen the beautiful sound that a Ducati motor makes is beyond any reasonable thought.
