Default 2002 Monster 750 - Instrument Cluster Woes

Just picked up a used 2002 Monster 750, ~10,000 miles on the clock. The odometer is still working but the tach and speedo are dead. The tach never moves, the speedo looks like it attempts a weak sweep upon turning the key to the on position.

I've been reading up a ton so I am well aware of the immobilizer issues. I REALLY don't want to shell out 800 bucks for a new one of these things. I need help with the following:

1.) Can anyone confirm the gauges are supposed to sweep when they key is turned on?

2.) Anywhere to get these repaired? I contacted MrWhizard.com, he says they don't do work on 2002 models, he has only fixed ones similar to 2006.

3.) Where do you find virgin clusters besides the dealer, ebay?

4.) Is reflashing the ECU and getting an aftermarket cluster a bad idea? It seems like with the unreliability of these gauges, I would be better off going aftermarket and never looking back.

5.) It really seems like any competent electronics shop could replace the stepper motors on the circuit board. There has to be somewhere to find these little guys without buying a whole new cluster...

I'm running into similar issues on a 07'

Actually purchased danmotos micro gauge off eBay.

Waiting to figure out a way to bypass the immobilizer.

yes they should sweep on start and I know the gauges are linked to the immobilizer so its not just an easy fix. good luck
