Default Stalling issue

Lately my Monster 1100 EVO has been stalling when idling cold. I'll start it up in the morning and it will stall after a few seconds. Then it is hard to start and stalls immediately if I don't hold the throttle at around 1500-2000rpms for about 10-15 seconds. Once it is slightly warmed up it is fine.

I'm going to call the dealership today and complain. I'm sure they'll just tell me to bring it in.

I bought it end of June and have almost 4,200 miles on it currently.

Hmm, so you're past the first break-in period and the first oil change interval. What RPMs does you bike idle at or start idling at? It should be about 1k RPMs. Maybe you just need to adjust the tension on your throttle cable?

It is idling at around 1250-1300rpms. And I adjusted the tension on the throttle cable, there is very little slack in it now.

I called the dealer and I'm going to ride over there next week and they'll take a look at it.

I did take her for a ride tonight and really enjoyed the new throttle tube. Really makes the throttle so much smoother.

Okay, I took it by the dealer about a week or so ago and they adjusted the air/fuel screws a bit but it is still stalling when cold. So, for now, I'm just holding the throttle at 2000rpms for about 20 seconds to simulate a high idle when starting cold. Dealer says Ducati is working on a revised map for my bike.

I cannot start the bike cold and just let it idle unattended though. It stalls almost immediately and then is hard to start after that and stalls right away. If I hold the throttle for about 20 seconds it will keep running after that.

I'm kind of concerned that this is going to be the way it is from now on. Would like to get this resolved. Personally, I think Ducati should install a termi exhaust and supply a new ecu for my troubles under warranty. ;D

^2nd that, haha. cold starts and stalls happen in a lot of engines... hopefully yours is just a mapping issue

Well, she's going to GP Motorcycles tomorrow and they're going to hook it up to their O2 analyzer to see how she's running when cold then see if they can adjust it so that it doesn't stall.

Update: Tomorrow was yesterday and the dealer said there is a motor that opens the throttle plates during cold start that is not operating correctly, kind of like an automatic choke. So, they replaced that and the sensor that controls it and are going to start it cold tomorrow to see if that cures the problem. They did state that there was an error code the bike was throwing but the check engine light wasn't on.

Can't wait to get her back running properly again... there is a big empty spot in my garage and my heart.

I had this same problem with my 796. I bought it in October and was only able to put about 200 miles on it before storing it for the winter (living in Chicago). The interesting thing is that never happened until the day I was prepping her for storage and then it happened 3 times. I didn't have a chance to take her to the dealer and have been waiting for spring to do so.

Hopefully it won't be complicated. I'm assuming it will be similar to your issue.

Turns out it was the exhaust valves. Both of them were too tight. Dealer adjusted them and now it runs smooth as can be. Much of the popping on decel is gone, the bike runs better, and no more stalling.
