Default A question for the exhaust specialists out there.....

I'm gonna try to build a custom exhaust for my S4rs over the winter. Does anybody know what type of stainless steel our stock systems are? 304, 316, 321, 409? I'm guessing it's 321, but it would be nice to know for sure.

I have no idea what the stock stuff is, but I use 304 tubing with a 308 or 309L rod & have systems going back 10-12 years without problems.

Thanks, that's exactly what I was looking for.

So here's another question for you Norm. Anyone else can chime in on this too.

Is it taboo to use a MIG to weld exhaust? I'm thinking yes, but I thought I'd get another opinion.

I don't use a MIG welder much, but I haven't heard of anyone using one for exhaust. Of course, us TIG welders tend to be a little snobby to MIG welders.
I use .065 wall thickness with some butt joints & some overlap. If you do try MIGing it, give us a report back.

Thanks again, that's kinda what I thought. I'll give it a shot, but if it goes downhill on me I might just have someone that really knows how to TIG fab it up for me. I can't justify buying TIG welder to do one project.

Yet another question. Keep in mind I already run a DP ECU and open airbox.

The stock system on our bikes run a 45mm two pipe system with a big ugly cat. After eliminating the cat, is it wise to increase the size of the pipes up to 54mm? The reason I ask this is that the full termignoni system runs a pair of 2" and everyone who has one loves it. But on the other hand I hear a lot of talk lately that running too big will ruin the midrange.

Another one I've been pondering...

What are the pros and cons of a two into one system? Lets say two 45mm pipes into a single 64mm.

The only person I know who has dyno runs on 2-1 vs 2-2, is Doug L and he claims that the 2-1 loses a little power. I've made systems both ways and can't tell the difference. The general rule of thumb is that large pipes work better a WOT and smaller ones at lower and midrange. However, that is a pretty broad statement and there are about 1000 other variables. These days I step up my tubing diameters thru about 3-4 sizes, ending up at 2". I have no dyno test to prove anything, it just seemd like a good idea.
My advice would be to just make what looks appealing to you and you'll be happy.

Thanks yet again Norm. I just didn't want to do anything too drastic and risk throwing something out of whack. BTW, I just finished my first TIG course at the local tech college here and it was great. So I won't be using a MIG on anything . I'll also be taking a secound TIG course in the spring that specializes in motorsport welding. Particularly in frame and exhaust tube. Can't wait!!

The only trick with welding SS is if you penetrate the back side too much it produces a "sugar" and can lead to cracking. You can trap the argon with a piece of tinfoil, like a net, or back purge - or, just watch your penetration. I use .065" tubing so when I want to make a seamless joint, I have something to grind against without ending up with paper thin tube walls. You can probably use .035" if you're going to leave the joints exposed.
Just out of curiosity, ask your instructor what rod he recommends, the general answer is 308, but I've learned to like 309L a little better.
