Starter Problem.....Just click noise
So I have searched up and down these forums, but haven't been able to locate anything close to my issue.
2001 Monster 900 Dark IE
So I was riding and my bike just cut out! (No gas =( ) So I figured that out later. Before I found that out though I just kept on trying to start it. ( yes I know ) and then now. The starter only clicks over. It wouldn't even turn the pistons. I jump started it and it works just fine. So from that I am figuring out that I fried the starter by trying it so much. Now can I just replace a solenoid or something or would I have to replace the whole starter??? Please let me know asap!!! Thanks

starter
First thing to do is make sure all battery to starter to solenoid connections are clean and snug. It's certainly much easier and less expensive to try and replace a solenoid before you have to try the starter, so I would try it first. I have a good used solenoid if you want to buy one. I also think you can jump the two ends of solenoid with an insulated pair of needle nose pliers to see if the engine turns (key on) over properly or if it still lags, you may have burned up your starter.

hey thank you very much. I checked all of the wires and they appear to be fine. I am thinking too that I burnt my starter. Is there a rebuild kit you think??

PLEASE ANYONE?? I went out today to try to jump start it again and it works just fine. Once it gets running it is just fine. As i am trying to start the bike I can see that the starter is weak at turning my transmission because as I try to start it the clutch is slowly turning. All the starter does is click and every time it clicks the clutch moves along with it. But like I said jump start works. HELP PLEASE??

How do you know the battery isn't shot? If the bike starts right up without complaint
when jumping from another battery, that should be a big clue. Although I'm
confused by your description. What do you mean the starter is "weak at turning
the transmission"? Are you trying to start it with the bike in gear and holding in
the clutch? If so, don't. Place the bike in neutral. The extra drag can make all the
difference to a battery on the edge of death. Even with the best of care, batteries
seldom last much longer than 2-3 years. Neglected ones a lot less. How old is
yours?

The battery is prob factory. I have only owned the bike for 3 months. So I am discovering a lot of problems with it. It just recently just start doing this. The starter switch is also sticking in when i start it. maybe its that??? I don't start with the gear in at regular, only when I jump started it. But might be along the lines of a battery. I try to jump start it, it wouldn't start it. It would still do the same. The battery is draining everytime I try though. I even push start it and it ran fine. hoping the battery would hold a charge from the battery but none. so any thing would help!

Hi,
From what you have said I think it one of two things
1 check battery leads specialy the negative terminal onto the frame it is swaged lug and corrosion can and does build up inside it and it would give the symptoms you describe, if this so then you would need to replace the terimal lug, this time solder it on.
2 Or the battery is shot, but I do not think that any thing is wrong with the starter
Cheers

Ensure your battery has a full charge(needs to be charged to load test) and take it somewhere to have them load test it, It only takes a couple seconds to test and find out if the battery is bad....

It's unlikely that you have a starter problem which is good because they are expensive & a pain-in-the-ass to replace, look at all the above.
