Default Shifting linkage on m900 problematic???

Here is the Scenario, my M900 is experiencing some sort of shift crisis. The bike rides fine, but the shift lever does not seem to have any spring action. In other words it wont pop back up. When I shift down, it stays down, i have to lift it up with my foot, set it then shift up again. When i shift up it there is ample play it goes way up. I thought perhaps the internal shift linkage was at fault here. i would hate to take out the alternator cover only to find that it was something else. Any thoughts here, anyone experience this before? Like I said I can ride I just have to be very careful how I shift up and down.

Sit sadly next to your bike, indian style with your chin in your hands with a depressed look on your face. (thats how i did it). Then notice a bolt to your right on the back side of the engine right behind the exhaust pipe. It is a 21mm bolt (or maybe 22?) This bolt keeps tension on a spring that has a lot to do with the feel of the shifter lever. If it is backed out, tighten it and try it out. If not, open up the alternator cover and see what you see. There are several adjustments that can be made in there.

It has been resolved...the interior shift linkage has a spring that had snapped off...a real sore spot for me considering i just replaced the starter.

did you feel that the bolts inside the alternator cover that hold the starter in place were....loose? In hindsight I wish I had safety wired mine.

The bolt was not loose...in my case the spring that controls the action had snapped off...i didn't bother I just installed a whole new mechanism with a tad bit of loctite and torqued to setting. Now I have no trouble with finding neutral, or missed shifts or false neutral, etc.
