Default cold / valve adjustments

I just got a 2000 m750, and its been running great. but tonight, i rode it to the climbing gym and climbed for 3 hours. it was a pretty chilly night, and i go out to start the bike, and it won't even catch. after a minute of trying and giving it some throttle, the bike finally starts up. it has trouble keeping an idle, even with the idle lever all the way up. i had to give it throttle to keep the engine from stalling.

i then rode it to grab some dinner, was there for an hour or so. went out to the bike, fired right up. is this because it was still warm?

So the bike has 6400 miles on it and i haven't received any service record, so i can only assume it hasn't had any. i was told you need to get valve adjustments every 6000 miles. could this be the problem? i want to make double sure that its necessary as it cost ~$600.

I seriously doubt if that's your problem, but it's never a bad idea to run the valves. I'd begin with the starter solenoid & go from there. It sounds electrical.

the starter is fine, it just wasn't turning over.

update: started the bike this morning, caught on the first go, but stalled after a second or two. did it again with the idle lever up, and it was fine. it's a bit warmer out now than it was last night...

Sounds to me like a fueling issue...You may want to look into the carb sync.

I've got a 2000 M750 too and had similar issues. I find that only using the smallest amount of choke when starting up on cold mornings seems to be the best thing. If I open it all the way, particularly in the colder weather, it doesn't start easily.
