Default Setting Adjustable Cam Pulleys

I've done countless searching on various forums on this topic, and read countless posts on aligning the cam marks on the cases etc when changing belts.
What I have not been able to find is resetting the adjustable cam pulleys to stock. There is ample information on cam degreeing, providing you have the tools to do it, but what about just setting back to stock, in the case you had to remove a pulley or, the adjustable ones (in my case) have slipped?

On the camshaft flange, where the pulley mounts to, there seems to be a notch that looks as if it would match up to the "dot" or marking on the pulley, that would then of course match the case markings when setting your timing.
This notch, in the case of the adjustable pulleys, could be moved advance or retard from the pulley marking via rotating the pulley either way.

Am I correct to assume, that under stock, or factory assembly, that that notch in the camshaft flange, is supposed to line up with the marking on the adjustable pulleys, which would then line up with the case markings?

It all makes sense to me, this would give you a baseline or stock timing, that, if you didn't have the means to degree properly, would give you a pretty standard setting.

You might try asking Brad Black at Moto One: http://www.moto-one.com.au/performance/ He certainly has the relevant experience.

I for one would be interested to the answer to this question.

I have a 2003 Monster Dark i.e. as well and am having trouble replacing belts because of ticking marks that don't line up. Before removing the belts I was able to get the ticking marks on the vertical and horizontal pullys to line up with marks on the engine case, but the cam cog dot would never line up with the line on the engine case. But I figured that was as close as I was going to get, so I took the belts off. Now I can't get the bike running like it should because apparently somethings not lined up right. But I read on another forum that some Ducati's cam cogs have dots that will never line up with the hash mark on the engine casing--it's just a factory setting that's pretty much useless. So now what? How many combinations of positions can there be to try before I hit on the right one.

I have timed one 998 and four 999. They were all a bit unconsistent, so the best is to make your own marks before taking belts off.

At least on the four valvers the cams are pretty much in the middle of the slot, original.
