Default Re: FAQ on fuel tanks.......diff. specs for years / models, etc...

Thanks for the compliments for both Michelle's and my bikes.

Yeah, it seems as the bikes get newer they hold less fuel... logically it makes sense as the space on the underside of the tanks is bigger (cutting into the gas volume) on the newer tanks and then the plastics I imagine (but have not confirmed) are thicker material as well.

And both Michelle's 2002 and my 2001 will get about 140 when we beat on them, 160 on average and close to 190ish when we're miserly. And these #'s come from riding into the gas station with the engine still running... But I still get nervous if/when that infamous light goes on. Who knows what it's telling me in terms of distance, I just know it's HUNGRY!

I've had to push em and it's no fun!

The skin on the plastic tank is very thick. They are heavy too.

well, looks like all the info is here, and pretty clear cut as well.

at a later date, if it becomes necessary, i will clean this all up and submit it for a FAQ. For now, keep adding input if you got it.

Here are a couple pictures of tanks which fit the S2R1000
1. obvious- the stock tank. note how the hinge sits around the solid piece on the tank
2. older IE tank- uses a different hinge which sits inside the pieces attached to the tank (didnt have it in hand when the pic was taken)

2007 From what I hear, the S4RS tanks are very differently shaped too. But I've not seen one to tell you what those differences are compared to others.

Are you sure? I have a 2005 M1000s & I thought the tank was metal. It is dented on the side, and I was about to swap it for a used 2003 M620ie tank I just had repainted.

I should have been more clear. I've updated the above timeline to include " In 2005 (But there's still a few Metals that were being depleted from stock, hence the 2 year span to actually completely change to plastic) simple check to confim, just check if a magnet sticks to it.

You're right. (About the tank and me chiming in. ;D )

I tried to fit a vertical battery FI tank to my S4 by rearranging the battery. Didn't work.

There's another difference in the tanks. Not all fuel injected tanks are created equal.

It's hard to describe the location, but here goes. On the vertical part of the underside of the tank just in front of the seat/tank merger, the vertical battery tanks have a bulge in them.

On that piece of the tank that comes down to meet up with the frame, the inside part of the tank will hit the left side of the head of the vertical cylinder on a 4v engine whereas it clears a 2v.

Hope this helps even if a bit long winded.
