I'm not sure either.*I just know when I took it apart for the first time the the gaskets had some sort of semitransparent red crap on them. It was hardened on pretty good and wasn't much fun to scrape off.

I was thinking about what I did the first time and I remembered that I applied the Hondabond to the engine case and cylinder and just sandwiched the gasket in between the two. On the Horizontal, the one that's not leaking, I applied the Hondabond to the actual gasket. Not sure if that would make a difference but it was easier so I think next time I'll apply it to the actual gasket.

I was also thinking that it might be a good idea to wait a little while before tightening up the head nuts. I was thinking that if the sealant was a little firmer when it was tightened not so much of it would get squished out. I don't know, just thinking out loud.

For my base gasket I used the Permatex copper gasket material. You can see it here if you look at the cylinder base. I've always used this stuff for my m/c gaskets, as well as some veedub air-cooled base gaskets, etc. Works really well to high temps. I usually give it about an hour or so before torquing things down, which is about when I get to them anyway. I've also learned that patience is key. Torque and locktight everything, then let it sit overnight before starting the motor up.

+1 on the bike, it looks incredible... the guys at speedzilla, as far as I'm concerned they can insert something other than a foot in their mouth [cheeky]
