Re: Popped my first cherry.
Those appear to be adjustable pulleys. They look just like the ones on my s4r. Now you get to buy the tools and learn how to degree your cams.

Re: Popped my first cherry.
Well I went down to Gars to pick up some oil and an oil filter yesterday and I brought my cam pulleys in to show the mechanic. He said he could tell by looking at them that they should be put together by aligning the mark on the pulley with the notch in the flange. I could barely see them but he pointed out to me how there were some wear marks in the centers of the oval holes where the screws had previously been tightened down. It seems to make sense. He also told me that since 2001 all monsters were give the adjustable pulleys which is some thing I was unaware of. So anyway I took his advice and installed them last night along with the air box and most of the wiring. I swear routing the wires is a bit like doing a puzzle. I don't know how many times I would do something and have to undo it again later so I could do something else. Anyway I've got most of it nailed down. Pretty much just need to finish the wiring and put the exhaust, seat and tank on and fill her with oil and gas. (cross your fingers)
One thing I ran into though is that I forgot to label which spark plug cord goes to which head. If I trace the wires back is there any way to figure out which one is which? I snapped this photo during the disassembly but I cant tell which coil goes to which cylinder.

Re: Popped my first cherry.
Well I was going to start another thread for this but If I get a dozen or so more posts I'll surpass Chris' Wheelie Monster thread and be the longest topic in the tech section with 110 post. Then I will be crowned king and rule the DML world. Moo-a-ha-ha-ha. ;D
Seriously though this thread is starting to slow down. No replies yesterday? That's cool I'd get tired of reading it too if I were you. But please don't leave me now, just when I need you most. I stayed up till 2 a.m. last night putting together the rest of my bike. I filled her up oil, gas roll her out of the garage and get ready to wake up the neighbors. Turn the key — all the lights come on — this is a good sign. Cross my fingers and press the starter. Then something totally unexpected happens. Nothing. That's right, nothing, not even a click. I guess nothing is better than blowing up, but I mean come on, we all expected it to fire right up didn't we...? ...Well..., didn't we? :-\
So now I could use some help trying to figure out what's wrong. Like I said when I put the key in the dash, head light and tail light all come on. The blinkers work. Most seems normal. One thing that isn't normal is there is no neutral light when she's in neutral. Also she doesn't seem to shift into 1st gear. All the way down seems to put it in neutral. This could be that I just need to tinker with the shift lever, but I'm not sure. At 2 a.m. I didn't really feel like dealing with it any more. Another suspect has to do with my last post. I never did figure out which spark plug wire goes with which cylinder. I tried it both ways though and still nothing. Something I did notice is when I tried to jump start it (I thought maybe a weak battery since she hasn't ran since last summer) I didn't get any spark on the battery. Now before you all go telling my I should try jump starting my motorcycle with a car let me just say the car wasn't running and I've done it several times with no problems. I've even done it off a running car with no problems. Anyway my brain is a little fired from lack of sleep and all this working on my motorcycle. Some ideas as to what the problem might be would be greatly appreciated.
Oh, did I mention? The bike looks kick ass back together. And there were only a few parts left over when I was done. ;D
Thanks again guys

Re: Popped my first cherry. CHERRY WON'T START
Sorry about the spark plug question, I figured someone else would jump on it & I was just being lazy. I'll go check & get back to you in a couple of hours.
You may have neglected to push the connecter into the starter solenoid far enough. It can look connected but not be fully seated. You can also bypass the solenoid by jumping across it with a heavy wire.

Re: Popped my first cherry. CHERRY WON'T START
Hey Norm, thanks for checking into that for me.
Well, I was going through all my photos of the disassembly and trying to figure out what could be causing my problem. I found a couple photos that I have questions on.
First photo is of what the manual calls a Remote Switch. What does this do? Is it possible that a poor connection here, especially at the middle one could be the culprit? I remember having a hell of a time trying to reach it (should have installed it when other parts were still out of the way) when connecting the wire so it might not be on very good.

Re: Popped my first cherry. CHERRY WON'T START
Second photo is of what the manual calls a "switch". Thank you manual, that was very helpful. Once again what is this for. I accidently painted over this one and had to scrape the paint off before reconnecting. Not sure if it's my problem but it's an idea.

Re: Popped my first cherry. CHERRY WON'T START
This last one doesn't have anything to do with why my bike won't start. I just don't remember where these hoses are suppose to connect to. (see the red circle, not the wire in my hand.) These were two of the "left over" parts I mentioned earlier. I can probably figure it out when I get home now that I found this photo to point me in the right direction but If you know specifically where they go give me a hand and let me know.

Do you still have the smog canister? One of the hoses coming out of it vents to open air, near the horizontal cylinder. Two other hoses go from it to the throttle bodies. Not sure if this helps.
