Default Question regarding bike registration in CA

Hey gang,

I have a question regarding registering a motorcycle in CA.

I just purchased a 2007 1098s Tricolore with 1900-ish miles. Very excited. Just gave him a deposit and will pick it up this week.

I purchased the bike from a gentleman here in SoCal. He used the bike for a few months as a track bike. He purchased it from someone in Florida. As a track bike, he never registered it here in CA.

Hence, he does not have a title. In lieu of it, he will be giving me an MSO (Manufacturers Statement of Origin) and the bill of sale. I read in many states, the DMV will accept it.

Will I encounter any issues at the DMV? I know I will be paying a sales tax. Will it have to undergo smog? I read on CA DMV that as long as the vehicle in question is 50 state certified it can be registered. My understanding is that all late model Ducs are?

Thanks in advance.
Mike

if the vehicle has never (ever) been titled, the MSO should be sufficient. you'll have to contact the DMV for the exact procedure.

all modern ducs are 50-state legal.

If you belong to AAA...and go there instead......
the process may very well be a bit more civil.

Heck, given my experiences with both CA DMV and AAA, if AAA offers that service it's worth joining just for that!

well, if you have a legitimate MSO/vehicle birth cert., then yeah, of course it's never been titled.. anywhere.

the bigger question is whether the MSO is legitimate.

fyi: It should be printed on security paper with a variety of anti-counterfeiting measures. g'luck brutha

Thanks everyone for your input.

I think I will join AAA and take advantage of it. Anything's gotta be better than a visit to the CA DMV.

I hung out with the CHP once all day too. However, I wasn't free to leave at my own will.

They'll probably want to tell you about their Busa. Both times I've been pulled over a M/C in CA, the cops wondered why I would spend so much money on a bike (my old 749) that had less hp than their Busas.
