Good "how I told my parents" stories?
So, after riding just under two years, I decided it was finally time to tell my dad about my motorcycles. About a year and a half ago I tried warming him up to the topic, only to have him inform me that I would be disowned if I ever purchased a motorcycle. Since he is coming to my graduation in about two weeks, I decided it was finally time to tell him. After agonizing for about three months, I finally just blurted it out tonight over the phone. Turns out he has known for about a year since a random acquaintance let it slip awhile ago! It's amazing how parents are always smarter than we give them credit for. All that agony for nothing.
On a side note: Dad is very against motorcycles after he crashed his Honda and hurt himself. Additionally, it is openly admitted that my grandfather never knew that dad rode, owned, or crashed a moto.
Does anyone else have any shocking parent stories? It's tough being a hooligan...

Re: Good "how I told my parents" stories?
While we were groing up, my Mom always told me and my older brother that we would NEVER own anything on two wheels. Too dangerous!
When I was 16, I moved out, got a Honda Scrambler 305, got T-boned, and while in the hospital, didn't recognize my Mom. Scared the hell outa her.
Two years later, I got my first HD. I still have it.
A few years after I got my HD, my brother got one, got hit by a drunk driver, suffered numerous very serious injuries, and my Mom had to nurse him back to health for about a year.
About a year after he healed up, he got another HD which we kept a secret from my Mom. Of course she knew, and he still rides.
It's been 40 yrs since I got my Scrambler and my Mom still worries.
I'd crap a load if my 22 yr old daughter got a bike.
I guess that's just the way parents are.

my mom found out about the s2r (first new bike in 16 years) when I was in the hospital, after having wrecked it > [laugh]

Re: Good "how I told my parents" stories?
I don't have a dramatic story. Turned 18. Bought 1/2 interest in a beat-up Suzi 250 for $50. Learned to ride it. Saved up the $ and bought an '83 KZ750Ltd. Brought it home and Dad said it was too big for me (he was right though...).
But, he said if I could lift if off of the ground, I could keep it. I *know* my adrenaline was flowing 110%, but I did it. I guess he didn't figure that I could do it, but I did. Rode it for a couple years and eventually they got used to the idea.
Mom had a moped at one point, and my Dad had some sort of small Yami in the late 60's for a week or so then wrecked it so it was taboo for him.

Re: Good "how I told my parents" stories?
I wanted a bike my entire life, but my parents were convinced that one would kill me before I even got on it. Eventually I realized that as a responsible parent in his late 40's who had survived medical school and was entrusted with the health of others I got to make my own decisions and somewhat impulsively bought a Vespa.
After I got my Vespa, I realized that since we all live in a tiny town in NH they'd practically know about it before I did. Therefore, I rode it over to their house and walked in carrying my helmet and wearing my gear. My mom said "you got a bike?!" and went out to see it. She called my dad ("Bob - you've got to see this") out to see it. Somewhat to my amazement, they were ooh-ing and aah-ing and saying how cool it looked. Dad wanted to know the displacement, top speed, etc. It turns out they'd gotten around college on a "little red Cushman!" The hypocritical bastards! (That was actually my dad's phrase, but I find it apt.)
Fast-forward less than 2 months. By then, I'd bought the Monster. Again, they were interested and hid whatever worry they might have had. Then, I crashed it. There was no way I could hide this. There's the small town thing, but the crutches and thumb brace would have been something of a giveaway as well. When I called up and told them, the first question was about my injuries. Once I'd reassured them they were minor, the next question was "how's the Ducati? Can it be fixed?" Now, every time my Dad sees a Duc for sale he calls up to tell me about it even though I've insisted I have all the bikes I want.
Sometimes parents amaze you, even after nearly half a century.

Re: Good "how I told my parents" stories?
As a kid, I wanted a Honda mini-trail, parents said "no way." As a teen, I wanted an XR 75, parents said "no way." As a college student, I wanted an Interceptor, parents said "no way." So with my motorcycle dreams dashed, I grew up and moved away.
Some years later, I went home on vacation. One night I walked in and my Mom stopped me and asked: "Is there something you want to tell me?" Huh, uh, no, don't think so...why? "Your office called and said they've been trying to reach you on your car phone (remember those?) They thought you might be on your motorcycle and that's why they couldn't get you" Mom says. Uhhhh... yes...my motorcycle... yep... I have a motorcycle....or two.
20 years later, they still hope I'll grow up and stop riding. Yesterday, I fell of a cliff (on a dirt bike.)
In five or more years of roadracing, my parents came to the track once. When I mention riding or a new bike in the garage, my Dad changes the subject.
I come from a family that is passionate about sailing...offshore ocean racing, inshore bouy racing, transatlantic crossings, yacht club cruises... and the lifestyle/gear/friends associated with that world. But they can't get their heads around motorcycling as a sport/ lifestyle.
I dunno... George

Re: Good "how I told my parents" stories?
Not dramatic but a good story...
My dad had a motorcycle when I was growing up so when I was little, I remember my mom making a deal with my dad that my brother couldn't ever get a bike and me and my sister would never wear bikinis -- wtf. Thing is, my brother had no interest in motorcylces and nobody was gonna stop me from wearing a bikini. Fllash forward 30 years later, out of nowhere I decide I want a motorcyle after riding a scooter in India, so I take the course, take the advice of friends -- start out w/ a cruiser, get something small, maybe a Buell. What does my dad say? "Get a Ducati." he still rides and has several bikes, none of which has ever been a duc so I dunno where that came from... but that's what I got.
still wear a bikini too. He is still not okay with that.
