Default Maximum Rev

Guys, sorry for asking a lot of questions lately. Here is another one

what is the maximum rev for each gear? book say 9K after 1000K. Today i tried to push my second gear up to 7-9K rpm. After 2 kilometers and slowed down i smelled something strange like burnt chemical coming from the open airbox. any ideas on what going on? ???

Wow 2km at such a high rpm is a bit rough on the engine, thus the smell but it'll probably be ok. Yeah you can go up to 9k briefly, like a fraction of a second under hard acceleration but don't stay in that range. It puts unnecessary stress on the engine.

I suggest cruising around 4-6k rpm.

On a 2 valve engine (like your 620) the power pretty much tapers off after about 8000 rpm, so there's no benefit at all to running up to redline. And for street riding there's no reason at all to be running it that high; 6-7K is about as much as you'd need in typical daily use.

Hello, this may be a dumb question, but what do you all mean by "K"?

I had my own issue regarding what speed i should change gears - meaning that for the first 2000 km i seem to have changed gears a little too early (around 3-4 000 rpm).
Some said "I'm not a car, i should change later, 6 to 8.000 rpm. I'm now trying to do so, but i'm still quite confused..
well, first bike.. guess it's understandable (or at least i hope so ) )

Do you have any suggestions?

PS. For the record: I have a 1999 M600, with a maximum of 12.000 rpm.. but i have no idea where the "red line" starts.

rev it til it hits the limiter. that's your max. shift before that.

I know the feeling... I had the same questions when I first started riding... I have a 2006 monster 620 dark. I used to try to figure out what RPM to shift and would spend a lot of time looking down to see where my RPM was, but now I just listen to the bike. When you are speeding up and hear the bike at the top of its rev, shift to the next gear. I would not try to rev it up so high that it hits red-line though. Just listen to your bike... Shift somewhere around 4500 and 6500, depending on what gear and speed you are going at. As for the RPM to cruise at... That all depends on your speed... When I'm going around 30 to 40 miles, I try to keep my bike around 3000 to 4000 RPM, and when I'm on the highway the RPM goes somewhere around 5000 to 7000 RPM.
Just remember, if your bike likes the higher RPM like mine, then let it go higher... It will not hurt the bike.. If you are riding and your bike seems to be putting due to low RPM, then you know you need to downshift and give it some more throttle.
Good luck, and it just will take some time to get use to it.

Thousand.
2k = two thousand or 2000.
