Progressive loads.
Just like going to the gym or running in a brand new engine. The better you treat it (and that does not mean 'taking it easy'), the more likely that it will serve you well in the future.
Newer riders will also have bigger problems than being a bit patient with their brake pads (and rotors).

When you are in the Break in stage of your motorcycle. Don't just pump up your accelerator for you to maximize the speed. Take care on accelerating your bike while in the Break in stage.

So I can't ride it like I stole it? I normally do that with new cars.

I have only riden Harley's my whole life so this whole experience is new to me and i have never enjoyed a motorcycle more than my Ducati.

Enjoy your new bike
I too just broke 500+ and this is the first non-HD for me. My Duc is feeling great so far and I can't wait to throw some Amsoil in this afternoon.

the bike gets better with each 500 miles you pass, mine is at 2500 miles now and it really settled in and is just a gas to ride. I love my Ducati so much im getting a 1198 soon to add to the group.

poor Harley doesnt get ridden very much any more

My dealer says that Ducati runs every engine up to redline before leaving the factory. I guess this is similar to how Lexus does it with their engines.
