Default New Fast Track Riders Tech Rule

FYI: I was at the Auto Club Speedway this weekend and the Fast Track Riders Mattias said they will now require safety wiring the oil filter and cap. I guess some tool left oil from turn 1 to 12 a few weeks ago and it took half a day to clean it up. So if you're spending a day with them, better check.

Also funny: Turn 12. They said 80% of the get-offs are at turn 12. I thought that was an exaggeration, but I've never been on that track before. Even though there's a runoff into the hot pit, you can barely see the red and white curbing from all of the rubber in that section. Plenty of reference points!

re: oil filter and cap,

not a bad idea anyway... i've always done it on my faired bikes, but didn't on my monster.

Not the drain plug? I'd think that would be just as important.

Sportbiketracktime just made oil plug wiring mandatory for Advanced and strongly recommended for Inters for the first time this season. In all fairness though 90% of all oil plug and filter failiures were on club racers in the Advanced group (STT's stats not mine), so it's not unexpected.

The worst oil related problem I saw was funnily enough on a M620ie which I think blew every oil seal in the engine simultaneously , there was smoke and spray everywhere. Fortunately though the lady was way off the race line and 200 yards from pit out, I felt really sorry for her and we couldn't fix it on the spot so no more track. :-[

In other news, several track companies in this neck of the woods are making more and more noise about safety wiring AND full belly pans, I guess business is good enough that they can afford to just cater for the dedicated track rider. One even wants kickstands removed.
I'm not sure it's a good sign or not.

Comments?

for the majority of sport bikes (read: not the nakeds), there is really, really cheap race (<$400) bodywork available. that solves the bellypan issue and i don't think it's too expensive of a solution.

a more likely solution would be to require oil retaining catch pans. personally, i'd still go for race bodywork.

safety wire is a good thing, but i'd be curious exactly what they want wired... "covering the majors" would be prudent. i don't think "full race wiring" should be required.

kickstands? it IS an impalement hazard. i don't remove mine, but my race lower covers it up.

Drain plug too.

Personally I think the bellypan idea might be a bit too far. However I've long been an advocate of safety wiring the fill, drain, and filter. It's a simple procedure that could save everyone a great deal of downtime.

Amen brother!!!

And if you don't have safety wire plier I'm sure someone at the track will loan you a pair and even help you wire your plug + filter.

While your at it.... not a bad idea to throw in some water wetter and ditch the coolant!
