Default Interesting

I thought this would get lost in other sections. Do you think this will impact tire technology.

A chemical manufacturer is already working to create large batches of the material for still hypothetical applications such as sealants and self-healing rubber duckies.

Ahhh, finally a solution to my predicament... Now I'll never have to buy a new rubber ducky again...

In all seriousness though, I cant really see how this could affect tyre tech since tyres tend to discard parts that break off and in order for this tech to function properly the separated items would have to be held together for several minutes... So unless you go back and pick up the tyre shavings that you left behind, I cant really see a use for this in the racing front...

For domestic applications, I think it could work out pretty well to fix any leaks, or abrasions, etc...

I think your right about track, but what if you are riding and get a flat. could you hold closed or use extra to fix the leak? I wonder how well it works under pressure.

well it says that it takes up to 6 hours to fully heal... My guess is that if it can withstand the types of pressure that it is subjected to when being pulled apart like that it might hold up to the needs of a tyre. Also from what I gather is that the healing occurs at a molecular level and when heat is applied it reconnects completely.

If you pull an IZ and pick up a nail, my guess is that you'll still have to call a buddy with a pickup to get you, but at night you can probably just take the nail out and blowdry it till it gets back together, Leave it overnight, and Voila! fixed tyre.
