Crush Washers for Oil Drain Plug and Oil Screen Plug
Just looking to change the oil on my Monster 620. I've got a K&N Filter, but I need some help finding the Crush washers for the Drain Plug and the Screen Plug. Any ideas on where I can pick 'em up in Sydney? I'm assuming they are just a fairly generic part, but I just can't seem to find details on exactly what it is that I need.
Thanks in advance!

Why are you replacing the washer?
I know its good to do this every time but I dont think its nessessary, so whats the reason?

Re: Crush Washers for Oil Drain Plug and Oil Screen Plug
In Sydney their sold at
* Frasiers,
* Ducati North Side
* Gowanlochs
* Flywheels
* Motociclo.
I change mine ever oil change and buy atleast 2/3 each time at at the shops, put it in a little bag and tag it.
When you don't replace them they can leak.Their made to squash only once & because aluminium has almost nill elastic properties (being so soft) it doesn't re-squash again and often fail in the next heat cycle. I've hade 2 fail. but......
You can use it twice, by turning it around, so that the side that was against the engine, goes against the plug.... but really their so cheap why not just buy 2/3 and have them handy. - Chris

Mine are copper washers, so if you need to you just anneal them and it makes them soft and plyable again.

Re: Crush Washers for Oil Drain Plug and Oil Screen Plug
Awesome! I work near Northside, so I will call them tomorrow.
I'm just making sure that I've got everything I need to do the change before starting. I don't want any unnecessary downtime over the weekend more than anything else
I read about the requirement for new crushwashers in the following links:
http://www.ducatimonster.org/faq/faq_oil.html
http://www.ducatisuite.com/oilchange.html
Cheer for the help.

I, on the other hand, have only ever replaced mine once in 195,000km, or about 40 oil changes. (admittedly, the first 10 or so oil changes were done by dealers, and _may_ have had new washers used, but the only time I've ever replaced one was 'cause Mike at Gowies insisted I take one when I bought a filter of him a few years back). I _occasionally_ end up needing the tweak the sump plug a little tighter the day after an oil change, but I suspect thats at least as much because I'm always a little cautious about not over tightening the sump plug 'cause I _really_ don't want to strip the threads as it is because the crush washer is "used up"...
Like Chris says, they're cheap and you _should_ replace them every time, but I certainly wouldn't put an oil change off just cause I didn't have a crush washer handy...

Re: Crush Washers for Oil Drain Plug and Oil Screen Plug
Just to add to that we are dealing with 2 different animals here...
Some are copper... (copper in colour)
Some are Alluminium... (bright silver in colour)
As Mick pointed out, copper ones are re-useable with a fair amoutn of safety/reliability. Heat it up nice and hot. I use my oven!(make sure it clean first) and dunk it in water. This will aneal it and let you use it again.
The alluminium ones are more or less single use. Alluminiums elasticity makes it a poor metal to try and aneal. - chris

Except for me, who reuses the aluminium ones dozens of times... ;D
Not saying you're wrong, 'cause you aren't, what I am saying is that the disadvantages that the Al ones have for multiple uses aren't quite as serious as some people think. Yeah it _might_ not seal up properly, but I've got one with at least 15 oil changes on it thats sealing just fine - and if it _does_ leak, it'll be a slow weep or maybe as much as a drip or two overnight - it's _not_ going to dump 3L of oil under your rear wheel as you tip in to a corner!
Like I said, replace them if you can get em, it's certainly the "right" thing to do, but my advice is change the oil anyway and reuse the old one if the alternative is putting the oil change off by more than a weekend or so. Don't sweat it.

Re: Crush Washers for Oil Drain Plug and Oil Screen Plug
Been reusing aluminium washers forever, with a smidge of sealant both sides , which means there's no need to overtiighten to get a perfect result, and the plug won't loosen.
Yes, it's a bit of a pest to remove the sealant each time but on a Monster both of those two orifices point the right way so there's no chance of dropping bits into the sump.
