Step 1: purchase a terrycloth-covered sponge at local parts house. Also either buy or make sure you have clean terrycloth towels available for wipedown.

Step 2: Using room-temp water, dampen sponge.

3) Apply small quantity of Scratch-X to sponge.

4) Gently rub against area of paint to be cleaned. If the scratches are all roughly going the same direction, rub primarily across the grain of the scratching.

5) Wipe off with a clean, damp, soft terrycloth towel.

6) Follow up with similar steps, but using Meguiar's paint polish.

When I get home, I can go look at which product array I used to clean up the scratches on the lower panels of my SS (from my offroad adventure during a Detroit Lake run last year). I did some reading, found out Scratch-X is okay, but not the cure-all, and wound up buying some more Meguiar's products to finish the job properly. Now unless you get low to the ground and look closely across the paint, you can't tell it's scratched (the deeper stuff still shows when examined closely, there's no way to get rid of all the marks without a respray).

BTW, I tried the series of Megiuar's products I bought on my car, which only suffers from some old swirl marks, and the areas I tested looked *much* better after the fact. It's worth the time to go through the multiple-step process, IMO. Sometime here when I get the car cleaned, I intend on going over the whole thing to get the black paint back to totally-glossin' condition.
