You have no idea why that person is wearing what they are on that day or how much respect they have for themselves. Then you go on to say people should wave at trikes because you don't really know what that person's story is and you shouldn't judge them.

So I guess you are syaing it is ok to be prejudiced when you think it is appropriate.

I especially don't wave to anyone not wearing a helmet.

Here in Texas every rider waves, except the 1%ers of course. I even have old farmers/ranchers in old pick ups wave at me when I ride. Heck, they wave even if I'm in my truck.

Guess what? It's about being courteous and gracious. Some are too "bad" for that type of stuff. I certainly was once. But as I got older I figured out that there's never enough friendliness in the world, so I try never to turn my nose up at it when I see it.

I ride a S4RS and an H-D FXDX. I've owned BMWs as well and have ridden Hondas, BSAs, and others. I would love to have a restored old H-D Servi-Car (trike) to tool around on in town. So, I get the "H-Ds suck" from some group or another. And I get the "Jap bikes suck" from H-D riders. And I get the BMW's suck from... Well, you get the idea.

Trust me when I say there are more important things in life to worry about than the need to be better than the stranger who's being kind to you. Many things.
i haven't been keeping up with this board, i just happened to check it out and this thread caught my eye. here are my thoughts on this subject...

first, i completely agree with NorDog. what, are we in high school? and we're the cool football players, and anyone else is a math club geek? c'mon now.

i wave to anyone who waves to me. sometimes, i wave to people in cars, especially when i notice they take special care to give me space or something. sometimes i wave to little kids in cars for fun. i don't know why, but they get so excited. and the parent (driver) gets a kick out of it and waves too. sometimes, a car driver will wave in apparent appreciation of the monster. am i supposed to not wave back just cuz they aren't on a bike? i also make it a point to wave to this bunch of harley dudes. i see them all the time. they know i'm gonna wave. i know they aren't gonna wave back. but i do it anyway. one of these days, maybe they'll just wave back for kicks, i'll raise my arm and shake my fist in victory, and we'll all get a good laugh out of it.

when you wave, call it unity, call it respect, call it kindness, call it friendliness,... whatever.

what would you call it if you decide not to wave? stubborn, obstinate, uppity, arrogant...

no you don't have to wave at everyone. in fact, you don't have to wave to anyone at all. but what are your reasons? if you don't wave because it isn't safe at the time, that's one thing. or even if you don't wave because you just aren't friendly. even that is somewhat understandable. but if you decide you aren't gonna wave and your reason is that they aren't "the same", then i'm sorry to say you're just being childish.

by the way, when i was in high school i was on the football team AND the math club. back then i didn't talk to myself because i was too cool. just as well though, cuz i probably would've looked like a lunatic

Default Wave

Okay, now this might piss off a few of the trendy, newer riders, but the point of waving is to acknowledge that we are comrades of freedom out there ENJOYING ourselves in the open air world........... And we are a real minority of people who aren't afraid to ride.

If you think the wave is to acknowledge you're a bad ass mutha@#$% , just park it at the biker bar or stay in town so you can see your reflection in the store windows.

So what if others wave on a trike, bike, scooter or tractor or freakin' harvester, they're having fun too .These little kids riding dirt bikes in their yards love a wave too!!!!!!!!(you're supposed to be their grown up hero , not a posser!)
Maybe you better think about why you ride, I ride because I love it, this is not rocket science.

Not too long ago I had someone wave at me but I didn't wave back. Because you see they weren't on a motorcycle. They were on a trike. Not a motorcycle that's been modified into a trike. But one that looked like the trike photo I attached here.

So why is a tricyclist waving at me? We arn't the same. It's not the same category. Sure they are just as uncaged as a motorcycle but the physics and the experience are quite different. I'm sorry but I'm not waving to people on one of these things

I wave to everyone...except scooters...unless they wave first. Nothing against them, it's just how I roll. I respect everyone, but i don't agree with them. lol I love to wave at Hog riders because they get all uncomfortable around bikes that actually run well! lol

I'm a really old wrinkly guy. Heck, I remember in the early 60' when anyone in any kind of sports car or motorcycle waved at each other. Not much waving among sports car drivers any more, but when I resumed riding bikes recently I was amazed that bikers still acknowledged each other with a wave or a light flash. I like to wave, but find the Monster's light flasher on the left side to be a great way to acknowledge another rider if you can't get your hand off the bars. Remember, a kind word never goes unheard, but too often goes unsaid. Same thing for being friendly with others.
