When I first started riding, I didn't even know about the whole waving thing. I was amazed at how many bikers were waving at me - Harleys, Jap bikes, and everything else - so I figured it out quickly. It is a lot tougher now that I'm a commuter in SoCal, between lane-splitting and seeing half the people when I'm going through an intersection and have my hand on the clutch. If I'm not sure on the etiquette (going the opposite direction on a divided freeway - it's dangerous enough without giving your attention to the folks going the other way) I just pretend I didn't notice them until they wave first. Even if they're on a trike, if they wave it at least means they're a friend of bikers, they support us, and are looking out for us on the road.
