Default The "On" switch isn't supposed to turn it on...

Rant "ON"

Or so the guys that bunged up the light on my new truck say. > My parents helped me buy a new Nissan Frontier as my graduation present but it didn't have a sun roof and I had wanted a sun roof. No problem, the dealer had one installed for me for a nice price so I smiled and said, "Thank you." Everything seemed fine until 3 months later when I'm packing up my truck the night before I come back to school after Thanksgiving break.

So as it turns out, the guys that installed the sunroof bunged up something. The rear light inside the cab turns on normally when a door is opened or when the car is locked/ unlocked but the ON position doesn't turn the light on. In fact, the light turns off if you switch it to ON. :-\ I'm hanging out in Torrance for winter break but I have to take the truck all the way back to Corona Nissan since that's where I got it and any other dealer won't cover it under warranty since the sunroof was installed aftermarket. Alright, that's a bit of gas but I can go see my parents. No biggy. I drop off the truck to have them look at it and by the time I can walk to the nearby In-n-Out and eat my burger they're done looking at my truck.

"Lamp is out due to sunroof installation. Customer to take vehicle to airstream for repairs." WTF? I have to take it to them myself? I was prepared to leave the car there a couple days and have my dad pick me up on his way home from work but this threw me off and I was like, "OK" and trundled off. This last week has shown me that I'm too passive and don't stand up for myself enough. I take a more active role in demanding what I rightfully deserve. I SHOULD have said, "Hell no! You had the sunroof installed for me so you send it to Airstream and have them fix it." But I didn't. :-\

So, I call the Airstream guys... They're out in Ontario but have an office in Huntington Beach. Nice! They'll come out to me! They give me an appointment to drop by between 8 and 10 today. I call them at 10 and the guys says, "Oh, sorry, I'm the only one in today and didn't get around to scheduling your appointment after we talked yesterday. I meant to call you. How does noon sound?" > Fine, noon works. 1:30 I get a call from a hispanic guy in broken english. Alright, I'll be out. The guy tinkers around for a few minutes and can't figure it out. He goes back to his truck and makes a call, talks in Spanish a bit and then comes back and starts putting the light back together.

"It's different than the front light. It's not supposed to turn on."

"Wait, what? It's not supposed to turn on... in the on position..."

"Yeah. See, the front light does but this one is different. It's not supposed to work."

??? > Fine, send this moron on his merry little way and start making calls again. Call the dealer. "The light is supposed turn on in the ON position, right?" "Yeah... why shouldn't it?" "Thank you, the guys you sent me to told me it's not supposed to turn on." Blah blah blah. I call the Ontario guys and they say, "OK, let me talk to some people and I'll call you back in ten minutes." An hour later I get a call from the Huntington Beach guys. "Did our guy show up?" "Yeah, he did and told me it's not supposed to work which I know isn't true." "OK, we'll send you another guy tomorrow."

So, stand up for yourself! If it's broken and someone else broke it, make them fix it! Just for kicks I went out to the nearest Nissan dealer and hopped into the back of one of their Frontiers to play with the rear light. ON is supposed to turn it on. Then for shits and giggles I played with the light for the next 5 minutes until a salesman came to kick me out. I woulda left sooner but the damn child safety lock was on and I couldn't open the door to get out and didn't wanna climb into the front seat to get out. [cheeky]

did the dealership have the sunroof installed prior to you purchasing the truck?

and was the truck new or used when purchased?

Truck was brand new and they had it installed for me before I took possession of it.

then it it the dealerships job to make it better. Having you deal with taking it to the person who cut the hole is waaaaay wrong.

They had it done..... they take care of it. If it voids any factory warranty...they cover the cost of any repairs during the 3 years thirty six thousand mile portion of the warranty, unless you signed anything releasing them from liability by having a non factory item added to the vehicle.

fwiw..... adding aftermarket anything to a car...never goes well. stereos, alarms, expecially sunroofs.
(words spoken from a former nissan/bmw/gmc/kia/suzuki/buick/cadi service advisor)

my frontier is stock..... other than the quick release bike mounts and ducati stickers.

look at it this way..... the electrical engineers are masters at laying out the design of the electrical system in your vehicle. there is more computer based stuff going on in your truck, than was in the entire apollo space program.

odds are, the guy who tapped into that harness when they installed the power switch for the sunroof, doesnt even have a high school diploma.

I modded it for ya.

I'd really like a remote starter in my F150 for life here in the icebowl, but some of the horror stories I've heard keep me walking my lazy ass outside to fire it up the old fashioned way. I've had her 3.5 years with absolutely no issues and it's stayin' that way.
