Default What are your favorite New Mexico Roads?

Let's share our favorite rides in our home state. I spend most of my time in the Northern half, so I miss out on some great rides. Please include good, bad, and details if possible.

Hwy 84 between Chama, NM and Mogote, CO. After Mogote the roads straighten out before you get into Antonito, CO so I find it more entertaining to turn around in Mogote. This is roughly a 40 mile ride over Cumbres pass. The road follows the Cumbres-Toltec railroad and the river.

+ The scenery is gorgeous!
+ Pavement is in good repair
+ Corner after corner after corner....
+ Very few cops

- Sometime there is gravel on the corners of the north side
- Lots of snow after mid-November, and the Hwy Dept. doesn't make it a priority
- Watch for deer and elk

Here are a few pics of the scenery (I've posted these elswhere but they're all I have of this road)

BIA 13 from Lukachukai to sheep springs (I think) is outstanding. Newly paved, really tight hairpins and lots of elevation change. It's short, but worth the 1.5 hour ride to get there when I need a twisty fix. Plus it's on the Res, so lightly patrolled. The scenery is gorgeous, bright red rocks with dark green trees. Sometimes it's so nice up there it is tough to keep my eyes on the road.

It should be a short ride for you Jeremy!

Is that near Shiprock? I've heard of it, but never been sure how to get there. What's the quickest way? If you ever head that direction, give me a call.

the best place to ride ive found if your in the alb or santa fe area is highway 14 beautiful mountain twisties, roads are so smooth its like riding on sticky glass. the roads are perfect and the traffic is non existant. And since its a scenic route no one drives on it. oh and yeah i forgot. NO COPS ever. Every once in a wile there is a staight away to open her up a little but gives you a real long distance to see whats coming up. I took the '05 999r and my '05 monster on her and i got to say with a couple of good buddies that know how to ride, ther is no better road. ;D 8) >

Here is a link I got off of Ducati.ms, Its a leisurely paced video up the Crest.. Not all inclusive, but gives you a pretty good idea of the road. Has a short little intro of riding through Madrid...

I'm fairly uncultured as far as riding, S14, Crest. Track.. thats really all I have ever ridden except the city streets.

Hwy 4 from White Rock to Jemez Springs. Nice twisties and elevation changes. Start in White Rock, lunch at Los Ojos in Jemez Springs, turn around and run it the other way.

Hwy 64 from Tres Piedras to Tierra Amarilla. Once rated one of the ten best roads in America by Road and Track or Car and Driver. Very little traffic usually.
