Default VT Road Conditions?

I know it's really early in the season, but has anyone been up to App Gap or VT-17 to the NY border? How are the roads looking?

I know a week ago people were still saying there was some ice up on top of the gap. I can't confirm or deny because my bike is still in pieces :-(

I can tell you that this is one of the worst winters ever for northern vermont roads, so even though the debris may be washed off of most of them, the good rides will involve lots of big bumps and potholes.

I have been out several times this year so far (central VT) Tons of sand/gravel out there. Also many sections have some frost damage I have not been up to the upper elevations yet but I believe they are clear. Be aware of slick spots from melting snow. A nice rainstorm would help clear many of the roads. Make sure your paperwork us up t date VT troopers are looking hard @ bikes this early in the season.

I took 17 last Wednesday...tons of sand, snow on the shoulder. Still a nice ride, but if you go up there, be very conservative. The frost heaves are awful this year too. I rode over to NH yesterday and NH roads are better, but still some nut busting bumps out there. Ride safe.

I live about 20 minutes from the gap. We have not had any rain for the last 2+ weeks and before that we were still getting snow (great ski season!). There is still plenty of sand and gravel on the road and there is still snow up in the gap. I haven't ridden up there yet and would probably not even think about for while yet. We are suppose to get rain this week (Monday 4/27 and Tuesday 4/28), so that should help, but if I was coming from a distance I would not plan it.

The roads down lower are good enough to ride, but as another rider said, look out for frost heaves.
