Carbon Fiber help
Hey MCM!
I'm new to the DML, New to Duc's period (Ive riding Rice before this one) and I just picked up a M900 for a price I couldn't pass. I have some part's that are carbon fiber (tank, Rear cowl and front fender) that has a less than desirable finish on it. The tank has a boat load of tiny divots that need to be filled. The rear cowl is nearly complete, it needs a finish sanding and a couple coats of clear and the front fender well, pretty much in the same condition. If anyone could direct me to a place that is good with refinishing of these parts I'd greatly appreciate any info!

Re: Carbon Fiber help
Welcome Billy,
I have no FHE with carbon and fixing it, but you might want to try MichMonsterS4. He knows his way around bikes pretty well, not sure about carbon though.
In any rate, welcome to the board, and as they say: It doesn't exsist with pics ;D Also, I think a few of us are meeting in Royal oak tomorrow for bike night, feel free to stop by and show it off in person. We usually are on 4th street right in front of the Starbucks sometime around 630-730pm.

Re: Carbon Fiber help
Hey Erik-
That's cool... Ill look around, Right now I don't have the bike in my possesion, Jeff at Eurocycle does and I wont be getting it back for another week. :-[ Maybe Ill ask Jeff if he knows anyone. I picked the bike up for a steal.! It sat for 5 years and now needs a thorough check up. I live right up the street from dntwn RO and I'll definitely be seeing everyone up there once I get it back. Ive ordered a new fender for the front thats already finished so the other two I have will be spares.
Heres a pic from the front (not the best pic)

and of the rear

and a macro of the issue I have with the finish.

I tired to post the images in this post but they wouldnt show for some reason.
Thanks again for the reply

Re: Carbon Fiber help
Nice looking bike otherwise. Will be a looker when done i'm sure. I know Yoda has a 900 as well. not sure what year you picked up, but he may be of help when it comes to other things you need to do to the bike. I know hes not on here much lately, but you will see him in RO most Thurs. He lives out toward Roseville, so not that far from you.
Give a shout if you need anything, most of the guys I've met here are a good group. [thumbsup]
Erik

I'm addicted to carbon fiber and thos parts you posted pictures of made me drool. That bike looks solid as-is, but is going to be bad-ass when you're done. I'm pumped to see the finished result.

Yeh, everything from Italy takes too much time to arrive in the States...
You'll have to sport your bike at Royal Oak on a random thursday in August.

Re: Carbon Fiber help
Now I know i said slowboat, but I think my parts are coming via Zepplin or something a little more archaic. I hope by next week now that Ill get my bike on the road. one cool thing though, my CRG's came in already and im chomping at the bit to get them on the bike. Still no word on the carbon fiber help. I think im going to wait and focus on that this winter. So hopefully, Ill make it to RO before the snow flies! I had hoped to get a new vanson by now but its going to take a little longer than I had expected.

Re: Carbon Fiber help
What you'll have to do is get with a painter that understands what will adhere to the carbon chemistry. My guess is that you'll be scuff-coating the carbon (not down to the threads, though), and using compressed air to get the dust out of any pinholes. Those will show as grey flecks if you don't take care of them before a clearcoat.
Once you (or the painter) has prepped the surface, use a quality clear coat, likely a two-part so it catalyzes and won't be affected by an errant gasoline spill. The last thing you'll want is to have it peel later.
It should look 100% good as new once you're done. That's one sick gas tank.

Re: Carbon Fiber help
Thats the plan HBP.
The guy who had it before me scuffed it and blow out the pinholes as you described. I know its gunna be sIcK! I cant wait. I did hear from someone that they are notorious for leaking. Putting that kind of time in something like that, im hoping Im an exclusion from the noem. Thanks again for the advice!
