Default Insurance Quotes

Just a general question. I know it's based on how big your engine is, age, and riding experience, but what are you guys generally paying, for 1 year of coverage, on your bikes? I'm looking to switch insurances and trying to get the best quote. I'm currently paying $89.00/mo with State Farm on an 05' S4R. Also, does anyone change their coverage in the winter from full coverage to just fire and theft? My insurance agent won't allow that. :-\

Do you have a loan on your bike?

I cancel my insurance entirely during the winter months. If you have a loan that may be an issue, since it's considered collateral.

I actually never carry collision on my bike. I just can't see it worth the money. The chances that I get in an accident that's so bad I can't recoup most of the loss out of parting out the bike is just so small. I paid $253 for the year this year, that included $250 deuctable theft/fire/vandelism and $500k personal $250k property damage and $500 underinsured motorist coverages, just incase a drunk moron paralizes me.

Most people don't consider upping those coverages, but the cost difference was so small it'd be stupid not to. The cost for a policy with minimum state coverages, and no comprehensive was $235 and that's like $20k personal $20k property and no underinsured coverages.

I think in Michigan this year the MCCA fee is $136/year so you have to cover that in your policy.

I don't have any loans on my bike. I'll call some agencies this week and find out what deals I can get. Thanks Justin for the info . ~Ron

Hey Justin

What insurance company are you using? I have been looking at Progessive. When you cancel your policy in the winter do they just reimburse you for the difference? I have thought about doing this but I'm a little worried about theft. My home insurance won't cover theft of a motorcycle.

I'm thinking about dropping collision also. If I did total the bike I imagine the most they would give me is the blue book value (which is only $3700 for me).

I'm with progressive. Yeah, they refund me the balance when I cancel the policy. This year I may not be dropping it though, because the policy is so cheap, and I'm not going to carry collision. I would definitely drop the collision coverage over the winter though.

As a first-time bike owner I've been pretty diligent in shopping for everything, insurance included. I checked out all the major companies -- Allstate, State Farm, Progresive, etc. -- and found the best deal with Motor City Underwriters in Royal Oak. They broker the policy out to a n Ohio company called American Family Home Insurance -- I checked them out and was satisfied with the result. Long story short, with MSF certification, MI cycle endorsement, clean driving record & proof of home ownership, I'm paying $62 / month --> 300/100/50 Uninsured Motorist & Bodily Injury with $250 Deductibles for both Collission & Comprehensive. Plus, they will let you remove coverage when the winter rolls around and send you a refund check. The DML has been tremendously helpful to me so far so thought I'd try and start returning the favor.
