Default NC Sportbike Ride 2-23-08

I'm going to try and join some NC Sportbike rider's forum members tomorrow (2-23-08) on a ride of Old Liberty Road. OLR runs between Liberty and Asheboro. This is very near where I grew up and was always known as The Old Crooked Road ;D. I haven't ridden it on a bike yet (or in a car for years) but it should be fun as it's a favorite of the forum members. They're meeting at the Bojangles on US 64 in Apex between 10-11am. The weather's suppose to clear up with a high of 60+/- so anyone interested, check it out:

I live about 20 minutes from Old Liberty Road. I've ridden it a few times, some nice curves for sure but definitely watch out for gravel in the road. Lots of driveways, 3 or 4 one lane bridges, etc.

How'd the ride go?

Was it 120+mph on public roads with hidden driveways and gravel?

We had a pretty good time considering...
We met a few other riders at the US 421 interchange (12 total). Then a Gixer 600 ate a mailbox on the first real curve. Fortunately the young rider was properly dressed and walked away with only his knee (and ego) battered. The bike wasn't as lucky :'(. The next hour was spent fixing the nice lady's mailbox and completing the bike's conversion from supersport to street fighter . He and a fellow rider from the Elkin area hobbled home safely with a valuable lesson: never hit the front brake in a fast curve!
The rest of us proceeded to BLISTER Old Liberty Road towards Asheboro. We grabbed a bite to eat and hammered it again back to Liberty where we decided to call it a day before the two olice: we saw started patrolling. I didn't see any gravel, at least nothing like what I saw on US 58 in Virginia last year. Plus, I'm not sure my little S2R will hit 120mph but the other riders found out that Monsters are no joke in the curvies! [thumbsup]

old liberty is sketchy .. so many driveways, so much gravel ... yet so many curves. i've been there a couple times and its fun, but it is a 20mph-35mph zone. so there is huge potential to get screwed.

the cops were out in force in liberty on the 23rd ... i got a ticket, in my car, 58/35. damn speed traps. there are lots of places out there where there is no good reason for it to be a 35 zone, other than for the town to make money.

Yeah, I grew up in that area but haven't been on OLR much since I went to NCSU in the early nineties. My cousin moved back after college. He led the group and slowed everyone down once we neared Asheboro and the 35 mph zones. He agrees about it not being the best road and wanted to lead us onto better roads in the area but the mailbox repair took up too much time.

Towards the middle the speed limits were 40-45 mph. I'm not sure if it was warranted because honestly we weren't anywhere near that speed :. Once you pass the US 421 interchange, I'd strictly follow the speed limits, especially in Liberty proper. It's a bunch of small town olice: with an inferiority complex. Always has been.
