Spare bikes.
Anyone here got an extra bike they barely ever use and wanna sell cheap? Or just something I can use to get my license from the DMV. I don't have the money to drop on a really nice bike right now, even something used so am looking for a banger within a few months.

You can get your motorcycle learner's permit without a bike. As for a banger, I don't know of anyone. But you should be able to find something pretty easy.

Re: Spare bikes.
Okay, sorry for the 'jacking.
Look for a used Ninja 2-fitty or 500. They're pretty cool looking, cheap, and nearly bulletproof.

Re: Spare bikes.
Or if you're just going to use it for your skills portion of the test, I think you can use a street legal scooter as well. As long as it's got plates. The old guys back home that could never pass on their Goldwings and Electra Glides would "borrow" an old Honda scooter from one of the dealerships to takke their tests. [laugh]

Re: Spare bikes.
Another option is to take the MSF Basic Rider Course. ( http://www.msf-usa.org/) It's a good class for anyone riding on the street. Besides all the safety information they provide and skills they teach, the following reasons may help your situation: they usually provide the bikes, passing the riding exam is accepted by NCDMV as a substitute for taking the skills portion of the exam, and some insurance agencies will offer discounts to those with MSF certificates. I took it through the Harley-Davidson Rider's Edge program last year because I was too impatient to wait for an opening through the local community colleges. I had fun and learned a lot from the highly qualified instructors but it cost 2-3 times as much. Scarier than the cost was seeing the skill level of some of those cruiser students who passed the riding test .

Re: Spare bikes.
I've been thinking of taking the Shelton Harley Riders Edge course, but damn 280 to drop in cash is a bit too much for me right now. I just wanna have the license for ehwne I do get my bike and everything.
I don't need a bike for the permit though? I can just go in take the test and get my motorcycle permit?

Yep. That's what I did. I haven't taken my test yet.
The permit lasts for a year and half but you can always go renew it after it expires. So, technically, you don't really have to get the motorcycle endorsement. But you do have to have the endorsement to carry a passenger.

Re: Spare bikes.
+1 on taking the MSF. I took it hrough Wake tech, even if you have been riding its a good idea. As far as a banger, pick up a cycle trader, or look on craigs list.

I agree, that's a lot of $$$ through H-D. I believe it was between 100-150 through a local community college but like I said I was too impatient to wait for an opening. Go ahead and get your permit through NCDMV. When you pass, tell them you're taking the class in lieu of taking the skills test and they'll tell you to bring your certificate in for a full endorsement afterwards. Then take it whenever you can and enjoy your two-wheeled future. By the way, you'll probably recoup the cost in insurance premium savings over the first 5 years alone. Maybe less.
If you can't afford to start off on a Monster, I agree that a good used 250 Ninja should give you good service at low cost. I've heard they can reach 60-80 mpg and only cost a couple grand. I know an experienced rider who's thinking of picking up another one (he sold his last one before gas prices went up). Good luck.

Re: Spare bikes.
another +1 on the MSF course. My wife took it thru a community college, and I believe I paid right around $120. She learned alot from the class, and all you have to do to git yer license when yer done, is take yer certificate(if ya pass [laugh]) to the DMV and either take the written test, or if ya already have fer yer permit, then ya gots yer license. Btw, I 2nd pompetta's recomendation fer a Ninja two-fitty or 500, also sometimes ya can find a nice deal on an earlier model GS500. Great bikes. [thumbsup]
