Anyone else catch this? I'm just glad they are continuing the offer a monster in an air/oil cooled version.

Not as pretty and not as powerful as a 796. Same service intervals. I can't see the point really.

I wish they would come up with a 1200cc air-cooled Desmodue but probably will never happen due to EPA.

It's not very different from the 796. The point is to have an entry-level Ducati Monster, and it should serve that purpose just fine. I don't get why people feel they have to bag on everything all the time.

It's got ABS and all the tech, and actually costs fewer dollars than the original M900 did when it came out in 1993. That's a LOT less, considering inflation.

Of course you will. If you've already got one, there's no reason to change. But there are probably one or two people out there somewhere that don't already have one, so this bike is for them.

Sorry but this is ugly and less power than my 696 in stock form. Supersport I'm loving, M797 is on its own.

It's about the same price as the 696 was, and cheaper than the 796 was. Again, if you already have a Monster, you don't need this. But some people don't have one yet, and some of those people might not be in the budget or experience brackets for an 821 or 1200. I really don't get this attitude of "it doesn't meet my particular needs, therefore it's a crappy bike and they shouldn't make it". This looks to me like a good addition to the lineup, for people who want to get into Ducati for a low-ish price, but like the Monster stylee better than the Scrambler stylee.

I do not at all take exception with the idea of them bringing back an entry level air cooled monster at a decent price point. I take exception with the fact that it is ugly. I think the old Monsters are lovely, I think my 696 is lovely, and I even think the 821/1200 are lovely which seems to usually divide people - but this 797 is ugly. Something about the trellis frame is shaped wrong imo - like they weren't exactly sure what they were trying to do but it had to be different.

The starting msrp of $9,295 is the exact same price that the 696 was in 2013.

I actually like the looks of the 797, my only caveat is that the various Scrambler models and 797 might be splitting the entry level Ducati market into rather thin slices.

Having at least the power of the 696 would be nice, but I wouldn't be surprised if that's the price to pay for Euro 4 emissions compliance in an old air-cooled engine design.

I wouldn't not be surprised if a lot of hidden power masked by Euro 4 compliance is unleashed by the addition of a few after-market parts.
