Personally, I like the 2001 Monsters. They are fuel injected and still have the classic trellis frame. The newer monsters are missing the back section of the trellis frame, which is a huge turn off for me. But, that's just my opinion. I really wish the 2001 had the single sided swing arm though. I was thinking to modify mine to have it. I don't know if I ever will, but that would be an awesome mod.
S2R1000 for sure. Don't know your local market though to see if it's a reality within your budget. S2R800 would look just as nice but I don't know if it'll have much more of a kick in the pants than your 620. I had a 600 here for the wife. First time I took it for a ride I thought it was broken. Then I realized, that's all it's got. My RS125 is way more fun to ride than that 600 ever was. If you can find a 796 in your price range, I think they are advanced enough to feel like you'd be riding a M1000 or S2R1000. That may also be an option for you. The 796 has been around long enough that I have seen some locally for the same, or less, as an early 2000 M1000DS or S2R.
or you could look for an S4/R/RS if your'e okay with having a radiator.
i have an M900, S4RS, and a Harley. the M900 and Harley have been on a couple runs around the block just to keep things from seizing, the S4RS gets ridden as often as possible
What kind of riding do you do? Consider the 696 if it falls in your budget. I had one for 4 years. They are quite a bit more powerful than the 620 and are lighter. With a 14T sprocket in the front and Termignoni package it was great.
So, I liked it's light weight. I had the model with no ABS (2009) which is the only way it came in the US. It had a 15 liter fuel tank which is bigger than the 800/1000 by 1.5 liters and it was relatively economical with the smaller engine. The 696 is about 9% stronger than the 695 which is als stronger than the 620. With the termignoni package it was even lighter than the stated wet weight of 407 lbs, so significant difference compared to the 800/1000. I found the riding position perfect - the handlebar height is a little taller than the previous generation models. It did need the DP seat to be comfortable. My only negative was the front was a little stiff for my light weight and was not adjustable. I think with any of them the 14T front sprocket modification is essential for better city driveability. If you ride a lot above 80 mph than maybe don't do it. The Termignoni ECU gets rid of the lean riding condition at low rpm.
