Default First time monster buyer looking for advice

Hi guys Ive been in the market for a low cost monster recently and I was looking for a little input on this one. It a 1994 m900 with 20,000 miles in excellent condition pretty much bone stock. The only issue is that he said is that it accumulates a little oil leak, he's not sure where its coming from but its only after the bike has been sitting all winter and stops when the bike is ridden regularly, Is this common or should I be concerned by this? Also he wants 2500 for it does that sound like a fair price? Thanks alot in advance!

This sounds a lot more promising than the other one. At that age, you will want to have all the wear parts checked -- hoses, wiring, carb screws, anything that can rot or freeze up. Ask about last belt replacement, how recent the tires are -- things that can need replacement for time, not just miles.

The most common cause of oil leak on these is the side cover; it loosens up a bit over vibration and miles. Step one is just to tighten up all the screws; if that doesn't fix it, step 2 is removing it and refitting with a new gasket. Most other likely causes aren't a huge hassle either. Fundamentally it's a simple and sound bike. Sounds like a decent price as well.

+1 on what Phil said...
My 95 with 16K on is more than sound - It is a kick in the a**!!
Decent price as well - as long as it is RED (the fastest color by far!!)

Philb, davidk, thanks! I appreciate the advice I was mostly concerned with the oil leak but that doesn't sound like a big deal now. I'm going to look it over on Friday so if I decide to grab it I'll post up some pics. Thanks again

Another oil leak source is the oil filter. When I bought my first monster there was a leak the owner was worried about I could see it was coming from the filter. When I got home I wiped it off, tightened it and it stopped the leak. That little leak saved me some money

If you can read a manual, forum post or watch youtube video and then fix things yourself you will be fine with any Monster that doesn't have serious problems that you would see if you go to look at it and hear it run.

There are a lot of great resources for these bikes and they are fun to work on.

Good luck
