I got a real problem!
It really bothers me that alot of people are parting out perfectly fine Ducatis for the sake of money! To me these guys that do this are a sad lot. I can understand it if the bike is crashed, and twisted. But a running machine??
Just thought I'd put in my two cents on the subject.Even sadder is is that I am probably buying parts from said bikes. Think I'll start asking.

Yeah, I hate capitalism too.
I hate capitalism as much as I hate getting parts for cheaper than what spare parts from Ducati cost me.
Just so you know, there is nothing special about Ducati's. They are machines. They have as much soul as a Suzuki, Harley, table, or doorknob.

Nope.
Please explain to me what makes a peice of metal have more "soul" than another peice of metal? It is an inanimate object. Thats it. What makes this brand so much more special than a Yamaha, or fuck a Kymco?
Nothing does. Your bike is not special.
Neither are you.
If you really want to get into it think about this. Maybe it is the community, and the passion for the bikes that a community like this (and countless other Ducati forums) share that makes it special. But what have you done to improve this community? Nothing -- just used it as a market place to buy shit for your bike. That is what about 90% of your post are.

My first thought: What the hell? And what's with the nihilistic attitude?
All this guy did was post his viewpoint lamenting dismemberment of
perfectly fine bikes, and you then jump down his throat, belittling his
opinion. Then you cap if off my saying he's nothing special either, and
stating he's obviously some sort of parasite by contributing nothing to
this "community"! Good lord. I suggest you might want to retract those
claws next time. Forums are so much more enjoyable when we all endeavour to act with a modicum of civility. Surely you mother taught
you that year ago. Right?

I have to admit...the sound of those claws were pretty sharp and the delivery was possibly a little harsh, but he/she is not incorrect. I'm also sure that most of the bikes that are "perfectly fine Ducatis" - aren't too perfect. The one I just recently picked up had been sitting for 7 years...and it looks great sitting there, but it's also a perfect candidate to part out - I know it's worth 3x the money in parts than how much I bought it for.. I've already spent a good amount of time removing, replacing, rebuilding, and cleaning it to bring it back to life, but I could have easily made the choice to part it out and put the money into another machine that also seemed "perfectly fine". This a project I didn't part out, but I have parted out a few complete bikes bikes in my time (that could have been put on the road if I had the desire). They weren't that "special" to me at that time. This one I'm working on seems to have more personality.

Hey, we can all have varying opinions, that's what makes forums
interesting, and if the first poster is a romantic soul who believes
Ducatis are "special" and deserve a better fate than dismembership,
so what? How does that justify a withering denouncement? That his
attacker ridicules his views is bad enough. But he can't even be
consistent. Ducatis, and the poster himself are not "special" in his
eyes, but a "community" is. Huh? Bad taste should always be called
out. This time it was my turn. And yes, it is a thankless task.

Both sides have valid points here, but I tend to lean towards smcdammitt on this one. I mean, I understand making a profit and all, but I do have a special place in my heart for Ducati (or any italian motorcycle for that matter). It's not about the "soul" necessarily, so much as it's about the craftsmanship. Ducati and Aprillia are two of the best made motorcycles ever. The craftsmanship and attention to detail far outweigh many of the cookie-cutter jap bikes. Have you ever looked at the crappy welds on a Kawasaki?! I can't believe people ride them. So I guess it just hurts to see people tear down a running bike instead of just fixing the few things that may be wrong with it. There again I'm not saying anyone is wrong, because the entire point is really moot.
I like to buy cheaper parts for my bike and if that means I buy them from someone who is parting out a bike...so be it. It's not my issue. Besides, they are just making my bike that much more valuable by weeding out others like it! lol

To some (most maybe) a Machine is a Machine, to others (myself included) a Machine becomes an extension of themselves ...
Sometimes I wish I could just think of more of my stuff as just a machine, BUT with time, and repairs, and modifications, and restoration ... I just get too attached

No joke! With all the blood I shed on the aircraft I work on you'd think they'd be living beings by now . I do talk to my bike as well, I pet it too...I guess if it starts answering me back I'll go see a doctor but until then I'm pretty sure I'm still "normal" ;D
