Default Advice Needed from the Experts

I've been looking to buy a monster, and it's down to two possibilities. The first is a 2007 S2R 1000 with 2000 miles and a rebuildable title missing the red key, and the other is a 2002 750 dark with 3 miles that hasn't been ridden since it was purchased new by the original owner. He claims that he hasn't had it running for at least two years, but it's been garaged the whole time. So, my question really is about the 750. What problems should I be looking for on a bike that's never been used but stored for the last 6 years? Any advice would be appreciated.

S2R1000- I would not buy an 02+ bike without the red key and card.
replacement for these would be about $1500

The 750 would depend on how well it was stored...it will likely need a full fluid change and I would replace belts and tires right off the bat.

That story sounds a bit suspect too...why would you buy a new bike and not ride it for 6years??

SR21000 - Yeah, I know the deal - Replace the computer, ignition switch and instrument cluster. I hear there are services that can be used to duplicate a black key without the red one, but he'd have to knock a good bit off the price before I'd go for it. It's scraped up some but not too badly and would pass inspection as is. He's wants 6600 for it.

750 - sounded funny to me too. He said he bought it to ride with a friend who moved away and didn't want to pay to insure it. Then he had some issues with his driving record. He's asking 5K.

I just bought an '02 with 1200 miles that hadn't been tagged in three years, with a similar story to your 750. I gotta say it was nice buying an almost new bike for less than half of new price, but... I only got to ride it 50 miles before the first breakdown. One of the fuel hoses split inside the tank.

So, new hoses, belts, tires, and other rubber parts are going to be proactively replaced. If you factor that into the cost, is it really a good deal? Because the "hard" parts (engine, brakes, etc.) should be basically new, maybe, but...

So I went out to look at the 750 with 3 miles on it, and the owner had just replaced the battery and put gas in the tank as I pulled in, and the bike wouldn't start. after about 10 minutes of trying to start it, I pulled a plug and it seemed like gas was getting to the cylinders, but I didn't see a consistent spark from the plug as I turned it over. I told him to let the battery charge overnight and try it again in the morning, but I doubt that will do it, so I may have to go for the bike missing the red key.

Thanks to everyone for your input. The seller of the bike with the missing key wasn't willing to drop the price, but the owner of the 750 dark replaced the plugs and the bike fired right up. So now I'm the owner of a New 2002 monster. Now, what to mod first...
